This has been abit of a debate with afew people I know for awhile now, and now just going over the recent Suffolk PD Chart/Schedule (http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78734) thread it's once again brings up the following question..

Suffolk gives out a test for $100 a pop, get's around or over 40,000 from all over the country to apply for it. Nassau gives out a test for $100, supposedly only gets around 10,000 to apply. The pay in either department is excellent. A cop in either department will make over 100K a year with afew years on, with Suffolk making slightly higher.. slightly. The work schedule in Nassau kills Suffolks and coming from somebody who's OTJ in Nassau, the retirement is better as well.

So, why does everybody go ape**** over the Suffolk job and Nassau's gets so much less attention? You can get a decent score on the Nassau test and probably get a call, but a 90 on Suffolk's and you're probably **** out of luck. It just doesn't make sense.

The NCPD test was $100 also.
A lot of people don't know that NCPD tops off in the High 90's because all they see is that 32k starting pay.
and NCPD doesn't really brag about it being one of the highest PD's in NYS unlike SCPD.

I took the NCPD test and I'm hoping I get in the 90's on it.
one of my friends just went into the class that just started and he only got a 85.

Nassau's fee is $100 like suffolk. Alot of people just take the test like NYS Lottery, they figure give it a shot for a great job, most of them can barely afford the $100 fee so they only take one of the exams (many people cant just blow 200 bucks on a long shot) and it turns out that suffolk gave their test before nassau so everyone jumped on that band wagon not to mention nassau requires 32 college credits, and suffolk requires 0. Just to give you an idea of the difference-

My cousin got an 88 on the 2003 Nassau Police exam. The list came out in march 2004, he began the process in april 2005 and he was in the academy in Nov. 2005. It took nassau less than 1 year to get to him, and for suffolk well they only got down to about 100 people who score 90!! Right now Nassau PD is down to 83 (I believe, the last class that went in on Nov. 2007 there were guys with 85, and the class that was sworn in on Jan. 4 2008 had guys around 84/85, and they are putting in 1 more class in may 08'). There is a MUCH MUCH better shot at getting on Nassau PD than Suffolk PD, and the top pay is much better than Suffolk PD.

Right now a Suffolk County PO at top pay makes 97k (5 years) a top pay Nassau PO makes 96k (5 years) then top pay still continues to rise for another 3 years for nassau bringing it to $116,900 at 8 years. Nassau also gets 12% night shift differential (I think suffolk only gets 10) so a top pay Nassau Cop will make about $140,000 without overtime while working nights at the end of this contract.

Not to mention the NCPD work sched is a lot family friendly since you only work 3 12hours shift and then your pay back week where you work 4days.

well nassaus starting pay is $34,000 when you get out of the academy you can either be sent on day tours (0700-1900), late tours (1900-0700) or a 1900-0500 10 hour tour on a 4/4 chart. the 1900-0500 chart is where you can make some really big money but your also working alot more. Many rookies are put on a four month 10 hour tour chart then after the four months they can be switched off. If put on 12 hour late tours a rookie PO's base salary is $38,080 + holiday pay, and your equipment check your looking at about 40-41k for your first year.

"3 12hours shift and then your pay back week where you work 4days."

not anymore. quarter days were only for guys hired prior to 12/31/2006.

I must had been thinking about another agency that costs $30. You're all right, so I fixed it. With that being said however, It's still a pretty big difference in attention. Even on the last test before this one they gave out over the summer, Suffolk had more people taking that too.

Yea I was surprised as well to know that so many people took the Suffolk Co Police exam but didn't take the Nassau exam....
But if you take a couple things into consideration it all makes sense,
Suffolk County's exam was first and had more time before in the deadline in signing up candidates and also had more ads out there....
Many people with not much knowledge of other police departments took the exam only because they heard it pays alot of $$$....
Nassau County's exam deadline was only within a few weeks of being open and the application was not done online, you had to mail in a request letter with your address receive the application.....

its sort of a catch 22. Nassau allows you to take the test at 17, and in Suffolk you have to be 19, so I was thinking alot more people were going to take the test.

I scored a 78 on the last Nassau test, maybe they will get to me on that one before it dies.

I don't think so, since they just started a academy a couple of weeks ago I think and the new list comes out in a couple of months. but if they do good luck.

the 03' list dies in march 2008 NC Civil Service MAY extend the list for one more year (thats what I was told from a few friends in recruitment). This list should be established in august 08' if that does then NC will terminate the old list and call off the new one. It would take another 6 months for their processing to go through which means a class wouldnt be hired from may 2008 to march 2009. Nassau never really waits that long to put a class in so after this may class they may call one more group for a nov. class of 50-75 recruits.

they will not reach lower than 82 on the 03' exam.
