Does anyone have any info about the Nassau County Deputy Sheriffs? There is very limited information about them on the Nassau County website. I was told there was a January '08 class for Deputies, but I haven't heard anything. Anyone???

There are Deputy Sheriff positions (which are police offficers) and there are CO's that work for the NCSD and drive the marked SD cars that are not deputy sheriffs. NCSD Deputies go through the NCPD police academy along with the regular county police. Both the CO's and the deputies wear the same shoulder patch but different uniforms. It is very confusing. Another Nassau academy started today so if there's anyone who is going to be a deputy they already know. If you're talking about the CO's that work for the NCSD... I have no idea wear they train or what type of training they recieve. I see them sometimes at the hospital with prisoners.

Anyone feel free to correct me if I am wrong, but from what I understand, the Nassau County Sheriff's Office primarily maintains the correctional facilities in the county. There is no patrol division that I know of. You could always call Nassau County Civil Service and ask them.

there is a patrol division that executes warrants and civil orders etc.
They train at the Nassau PD academy and are Police Officers.
A few were sworn in on friday, the 1st day of class 08-227 was today for Nassau PD.

Oh good. If they have a patrol division then I can add them to the list of agencies I'm applying to. That would bump it up to eleven :).

Corrections and deputies in Nassau are 2 different jobs. There is a seperate exam for each. Like the earlier post stated, the deputies are police officers, corrections are not and have different training.

Nassau County Corrections falls under Sheriffs Department and are NYS Peace Officers. Deputy Sheriffs are Police Officers.

Sheriff/Corrections--
I receieved a letter about a month ago stating my score and list and it read that it was going to start calling in 3 weeks. So during the month of January. I think it read calling to score of 85 within 3 weeks. Deputy or Corrections both are good. In Mineola, nobody stays more than a year. So any trouble makers at least they are gone within a year. I took the test which was wrapped with the State Corrections. They called me right away, but there academy is too far upstate and you bunk there. Nassau CO tops out at 72 and change as base. I think it is base? Not sure, but they did show 72 as top. Right now going into I hope the NYPD July class if I get my credits together. FDNY EMS just called me to come in for a interview on Tuesday. I think they have a academy in March. Police is in July. Not sure what to do. Would the police frown on that I would leave the other academy. Who knows? Thanks~j

I heard a rumor that there will be a class sometime around June/July but it's unclear if CO's will be in that class...

Any idea when they will start hiring off the list that will come from the test they're giving on 4/12?

I read the CO contract was settled. Any truth. I cannot find any information on it. What type of pay scale is it now? I have a interview tomorrow.

CO's now make a base of $93K after 11 years. $25K to start.
Genomona- A class for CO's would be full of only CO's. The Deputy Sheriff positions are Police Officer positions and those recruits attend the Nassau Police Academy. The CO's have their own academy at the jail.
Either way, you're not hurting for money though, as you can see.

Wow! Can anyone second that? I'll be extra good tomorrow meeting my BI. Wish me luck.
