I'm new to the forum so I apologize if my questions arent up to par. FYI-I'm 22 years old, I'm also from the southern most tip of New Jersey.

I have an interview in about 3 weeks for a Class 2 Police Officer position for a non-civil service Police Department(i have not taken the civil service test). I think my chances of getting the job or at least being seriously considered for the position are good because I am friends with the ex-Chief of Police for that Department. I was curious though still if I should know more about what to expect...(questions they might ask, concerns I should have)???

Furthermore, if I do get the position, all goes well,I get through the Police Academy and work for this Department for the summer. If after that I wanted to move to PA(lancaster area) , to then become a fulltime Officer, would that be difficult? Harder then staying in southern NJ? Are there many more tests involved? or would it be the same as here, just take the civil service test and wait to picked like everyone else?

any help in this area would be much appreciated.
thanks

You might get a bit more intel out of the New Jersey specific forum, fwiw.

I can't tell you anything about east coast lateralling. But I can tell you these two things:

One. Being a friend of the ex-chief could be either helpful or not (depending on if the panel members liked him, or not.). It would be wise to not bring this up in an interview, you will sound like you're seeking favors, which you would be.

Two. Expect, at a minimum, the following question types:
a.-Opening (Tell us about yourself, etc.)
b.-Closing (What else can you tell us about yourself, or Is there anything else you'd like to add, or What makes you a better qualified candidate than the next guy).

2-5 situational questions. These are hard to prepare for. Just think through how you might handle any hot-button issues for your area or agency. If the news has been filled with articles about the evils of hi-speed pursuits, then think through how you would handle them, etc.

HTH,

EDJ

If you attend a police acedmy in Jersey you can apply to departments in PA regardless but the proces in PA is test, Phyysical Ability, oral, background, Medical, Psych. Still have to do it not neccessarily in that order. If hired and sponsered you may beable to challenge the act 120 test but maybe not depends.
