View Full Version : NYC Parks Dept - Urban Park Rangers
I saw an announcement for Urban Park Rangers with the NYC Parks Dept. It described them as what I would assume are peace officers, but didn't give much detail about what they do. It didn't even say whether or not they are armed. Does anyone know anything about them? The starting pay seemed comparable to NYPD (i.e., low - around 34,000), but there was no real mention of top pay, promotion, retirement, etc...

They are unarmed and leave most of the enforcement to NYC Parks Enforcement Patrol officers who are also unarmed. From what I understand, the Urban Park Rangers are mostly tour guides and "interpretation rangers". They do have ranks but I am not sure of the exact structure.
Why are PEP officers unarmed? It makes no sense in this day and age ...
I think the annoucement was for the Parks Enforcement Patrol. Unarmed in NYC seems like a recipe for disaster.

PEP is a very good gig to get into so you can get your foot in the door.
top pay is not fascinating, but if you are young with little overhead, you should do fine.
yes, PEP officers are unarmed and are Peace Officers. Make arrests, issue summonses, moving violations and criminal summonses. They patrol all NYC parks/recreation areas.
