Thanks..what would do you think they need as far as paperwork?? i really need to rack my brain and remember her name so i can contact her if needed.
They need a letter from the doctor stating why you went to see them, what the outcome was, and all the little details. Or if it's been so long and they have no record of you then they can write that as well.

My question is pretty much for anyone that is currently in the academy. Is there more than one gym in the police academy? Because I have a 0700 JST monday the 23rd . I thought that might get in the way of the recruit morning P.T.

if anyone gets the call you should post it saying you got it, I know I will that way we can get a time frame.

Same with me, it's just for your BI to see what your references say about you and generally looking for anything negative.

Same with me, it's just for your BI to see what your references say about you and generally looking for anything negative.
it depends on who your BI is and what comes up on your background, I started my BI back in march and MY BI hasn't called my references yet.

06-13-2008, 01:33 AM
Strange. I don't think theres anything wrong with my background. They've called my references and checked my neighbors. Maybe its beacuse you know a lot of police officers?

Looks like your screwed... best bet is to get your drivers abstract to show you have a current clean record or contact the florida dmv to write them a letter stating that you are cleared and give that letter to ur BI

One of the officers at mini-med on Tues said they will start calling on July Fourth. They said you will need to be there to pick up the call, or get back to them soon, otherwise you will not make it. If it is true that the date is now the 8th, the may start calling on the 3rd.

I calculated it out, and if you don't live in NYC and don't pay city tax, you should be looking at around $2000 a month.

Only thing about not paying city taxes is that they get you at the end of the year, when you file your taxes.

john,
with NYPD city residents pay city tax, and non-city residents pay the city waiver. it is not a tax, but an agreed upon percentage.
pre-merge (prior to april 1995) housing police officers like myself pay neither as we sued. we did not agree to the waiver. we were taken over by NYPD, and the waiver was looked at as a hostage tax. we sued, and we won.

So housing only merged with the NYPD back in 1995, I didn't know that. Look at that you learn something new everyday.

When your out of the academy and traveling in full uniform can still ride the LIRR and Metro North for free?
Yes, but once again. While you're in full uniform you're not suppose to sit down. Now once you're off duty and in your civilian clothes you can get away with sitting down while riding the train.

everyone was yelling lol. For some people it might be a "culture shock" being givin a slight taste of paramilitary lifestyle. Those 3 days at Queens College are the worst though, standing in line real early in the morning watching the sun come up. Cant talk, no eating/drinking while on line, your shoulder to shoulder with the person next to you and your looking straight. then you're finally let into the auditorium where you get your recruit handbooks and forms to fill out. Then told to shutup and sit down and read your recruit handbooks. believe me you will know that book front to back by day 3 lol. Its going to be very unfomfortable in there, gonna be packed in there like sardines in a can. OH by the way those 3 days at queens college theres no meal breaks. 8 hours all 3 days with no meal breaks and your in the same room for the entire duration. you could try sneaking in little snacks but i wouldnt advise it for it will get you chewed up by an instructor if one catches you eating. they watch you like hawks in there. they give you little breaks though, 10 min for like 1000+ people to go use the bathrooms lol. No talking on breaks, either use the bathroom or read your recruit handbooks in your seat quietly. Bottom line for those 3 days your filling out forms, you find out what company you're in and tour you will be working at the academy. thats pretty much it for those 3 days.

The next few weeks are going to creep by. Just this past Monday I finally got to hand in the rest of my paperwork. My BI said she would call me if she needed anything else. I will call her probably friday just to make sure she hasn't lost anything and doesn't need anything else, if I can get in touch with her. This waiting is going to be tough but worth it if i get the call.

yes, The best plan that I see the best is Vytra. (That's the one I'm going to pick, prescription meds are only 7bucks after a 50dollar a year deductible, doctor visits are 5bucks.)
if you want to get a head start and look at health plans

john and all.
prescriptions are done through the PBA. seperate from city medical benefits. i should add that eyeglasses and dental are through the PBA also.
do not pick a plan based on prescription meds.
you can pick a rider to assist if you think you will have SERIOUS medical problems that our prescription plan will not cover.
pick a doctor first. get a good one. ask that doctor what he/she accepts. then go down the list, and make a solid educated decision. if you have a wife that needs a gynecologist... look closely at the plans. some doctors don't accept the plans.
you can switch plans during the November change time period each year.
i now use HIP. i don't pay a dime out of pocket. no money from check, and no co-pay. i chose this because my doctor accepts it, and he will fax / email refferals to me upon request. with a wife and kids this is a huge benefit.
i pay more to bring my dog to one veterinarian visit than i do for wife and kids for the whole year!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ladies and gentlemen, listen closely the first week or two of the academy. hopefully they still bring in guest speakers from the union and city. sign up for deferred compensation immediately, and put as much as you can/can't afford in there. also sign up for ITHP waiver, as that money goes into your pension account and ears over 8% interest. you will probably want to take a pension loan at 3 years or so, against all the advice not to. listen to the advice please. if you do need to... the ITHP waiver will add up to an overage, and you won't do as much damage.
go to a retirement seminar as soon as you get out of the academy.
yes - a retirement seminar while you still have 19 1/2 years left. at least you will be armed with the right info from the beginning. the seminars are hosted by the PBA and DEA - Detectives endowment association - not the drug bunnies.
good luck lads.

Im not sure if she is holding me back for this or if she has put my paper work in. I asked about a month ago how july looked she said she is putting a rush on the paper work. Last time i talked to her was 2 weeks ago and i havent heard anything since and have not recieved a appointment to sign into my facebook. How much does the PBA medication cover? because I take meds on the daily basis and if you add up how much it cost a year you're looking at 4-6k a year just on one medication. 170-180dollars a bottle. two bottles a month= 330-340 a month. That's why I picked vytra because the don't have a maximum amount per year like the other riders do.

The Health and Welfare Fund of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association provides a mandatory generic benefit for prescription drugs for all active members and their eligible dependents through the use of the PBA/CAREMARK Prescription Drug Program. The PBA Prescription Drug Program utilizes a formulary tier system and contains a mail order provision.
The following co-payments apply to your Prescription Drug Benefit:
*
$5.00 co-payment for Generic Drugs
*
$5.00 co-payment for Formulary
*
$8.00 co-payment for Non-Formulary
The following maximums apply to your Prescription Drug Benefit:
*
Annual : $10,000
*
Lifetime : $120,000
That's directly from the PBA website, does that sound about right THeole34?
I'm still going to choose the rider from vytra since I'm pretty sure I will exceed the 10k maximum a year, so I'll rrather have both than get stuck without my meds.

Heres some advice for the entire time as a recruit. STAY OUT OF TROUBLE IN AND OUT OF THE ACADEMY ! while in the academy your companies are just going to be one giant cluster f**k of different personalities and maturity levels. You guys and girls are going to love each other the first month but as you get to know each other your gonna start to hate each other. Just remember everyone in that building with a grey uniform on is in there for all the same reason, to become a police officer! respect each other (ESPECAILLY your company SGT's) and dont let little petty BS get to you. You fight with another recruit or whatever because someone said this or did that or whatever the case may be, guess what..you're going back to your old job or wherever it is you came from. The first 3 months is academics, do the work, study, and pass the tests. Thats all there is to it. After academics you'll start to really have fun. You'll go to the gun range, drivers training, etc.. and before you know it, you'll be throwing your white gloves in the air. As for outside the academy you wont have much of a life ( if you care about successfully completing the academy). spend your weekends relaxing and studying or doing hw. My friends barely saw me for the first 3 months, i stayed in almost every weekend the first 3 months. I mean i went out in the afternoon, had lunch with some friends or whatever and that was it. My sat nights i spent doing hw or studying. Sunday i stayed in relaxed and did more hw or studying. Trust me, depending on who your OCI is, you'll get so much hw you'll have no choice but to stay in. Just FOLLOW ALL THE RULES regarding being inside the building and outside and you'll be just fine. If you want what awaits for you at the end, make the neccessary sacrifices in order to get it. I've made some sacrifices and let me tell you, it was worth it. Not hanging out alot, barely seeing any of my friends, missing birthday celebrations, pretty much having no life. ( keep in mind that was only for 3 months) after I finished all the testing i was able to come out a little more. And thats pretty much it. Like I said before, good luck to all of you heading in, maybe I'll see some of you when i come back to visit my OCI ( like im gonna know who you are anyway) lol.

That's the date that they told us in our mini medical, but a couple of people that took the mini medical after me said it got moved up to the 8th because some person is going on vacation. I guess you mean recruits because cadets and recruit are two different things, I know for the MTAPD all the MTA recruit have their own company or platoon w/e you want to call it, same uniforms except their pins are different from the NYPD onse I believe. for the NYSUP guys I'm not too sure.

Has anyone has ever contacted their psychologist and got thru? I've asked my BI what papers I'm missing and BI told me I have to ask my psychologist but every time I call the psych services my psychologist is on interview and the lady that's taking the call is not much of a help and told me that they don't transfer any calls to the psychologist. They said an inch and a half from the top of your head. If you don't have it there, they will go elsewhere, ie arms, legs, etc. No they do not do a good job doing so, and it is rather funny to see some of the hackjobs they did, like the leg mohawk.

A furlough is a tentative Offer of Employment. They basically do this when your Exam is about to expire.
So they offer you an Early emplyment offer to circumvent this sitiation, And you not making the calss because your exam Expired.

I may be wrong but I think your Investigator cannot take you off review it has to get approved by an Inspector. You have to let your investigator know if you quit your job.

How does the backfill class exactly work for those particular recruits if they're starting the academy 2 weeks later?
How are they brought up to speed with the stuff they missed in the first two weeks?
You'll get sworn in on whatever your hire date is. If Academy starts on July 9th, backfill will probably get hired on the 21st or 23rd, something like that. Backfill's usually about two weeks after the initial hiring.

I spoke to my BI yesterday and asked her if everything was cool, and she was a bit ticked off with me because I had failed to notify her about a ticket for tinted windows she kept calling it a moving violation. I was under the impression that moving violations were tickets that were given to you such as a seatbelt, no left turn, speeding etc.. I did not tell her because I didn't think this was in that category.............oh well then i proceeded to asked am I good to go and she said she can't disclose this information. Well as of now I am a bit nervous with only a couple of weeks to go. Why do most of the other BI's tell you guys you are good to go? We will see what happens If it doesn't work out I still have my Court Officer process to fall back on :(

They bust their tails, basically. Backfills get pushed a bit harder by their instructors and typically have a ton of homework that first trimester because they're starting behind everyone else. It's not a big deal though, because a lot of the chapters in the first trimester are sort of...fluffy. A lot of history of the NYPD, etc. that isn't really hit that hard on the exam. The instructors know which chapters receive a lot of emphasis on the exam and which ones don't, and they'll teach accordingly.

Tickets are tricky things, they can be non-moving, moving, non-hazardous, hazardous, expire from your abstract or never expire.
I have no idea of how they determine any of the rankings, which is why I disclosed a fishing ticket I got many years ago. Moved to a new state that made you have a fresh water license and no salt water license from a state that was the exact reverse.
"Most of the other BI tell", we here have no idea of the percentage that do and the percentage of BI's that don't disclose if you/me are 4 Q.
Just be ready and available at your phone of record for the hopefull phone call around the July 4th holiday.

What happens if you dont have 2.0 gpa to get into the academy
NYCTNT
06-21-2008, 10:05 AM
Bam,
If you do not have a 2.0gpa on your transcript, you will have to remove any "F" grades off of your transcript to lower it down. If you do not have any F's, then remove the weak grades and make it up with FEMA.
What you do is, contact EXCELLSIOR COLLEGE(spelling?) in New York(upstate somewhere). What they do is, take your F's out of your transcript and keep the good grades on their transcript, thus making your GPA higher.
Its good to go with the NYPD. Cost? About $375 for the transcript re-do.
How long does it take? As the academy is approaching, it might take an extended time. If you look into this over the weekend and call them on Monday, you might have a fighting chance to get a transcript back on time.

You can call your BI. Scheduling won't know, probably. Don't be surprised if you get a response like "Oh, the computers are down so I can't tell you" from your BI, though. They seem to get annoyed when candidates ask questions like that. Still...they ought to let you know.

what kind of exams they give out? I am a college student so when it comes to exams i think about multiple choice or essays. Now the exams they give out in the academy are they similar to multiple choice? Basically my question is what kind of format they use for the exams in the academy? Also are the exams hard or easy?

Everything that counts is multiple-choice...trimester exams, justification exam, open-book final exam, written gym exams, written firearms exams, the exams you'll take in the seminars and workshops...everything is fill-in-the-bubble-on-the-Scantron. There are two BS papers you're supposed to write and present near the end of your training, but a lot of instructors don't bother assigning or collecting them.
Hard or easy? Well, if you're generally good at multiple-choice tests, you'll have no trouble with these. Like most multiple-choice tests, each question usually gives two answers that are definitely wrong, one that might be okay, and then the correct answer. The instructors will give you tips on how to dissect the questions, too. Altogether, if you study a bit you'll do okay. I didn't study for anything and still ended up with a good final average. It really depends on how you are with school, but most people do fine.
Now, how well do people actually learn the law and Patrol Guide...that's another story.

Written & Oral (together) are just 1 Q. The 4th Q is for your background investigation, and only happens when your file has been signed off on by a supervisor indicating that you are ready for hire. You can check the status of your investigation at any point by calling candidate relations... (718) 972-3120

Would this lead you guys to believe that I am 4Q'd?

hahahha aint that the truth.
You get notified 2-3 days before the academy and we will get our commands like 3 days before we have to show up. I asked one of the OCI's why they do this and he said
"We don't want anyone to get in trouble between the time we officially call them to report to get sworn in and the time they show up at the door. The more time we have in between the two events the more people that get in trouble for one reason or another."
and as far as the commands
"You are all going to whine and bitch about it and no one in the academy wants to hear it so we tell you as late as possible."
Sounds like some good information to me.
By the way, one of the Sgt's was talking about the next class today and he said July 8 was their official start date. He's one of the people who's in charge of the OCI's so I would expect that he has some good info. Just putting that out there... Don't know what you guys have heard?

My investigator told me this morning not to be concerned if your references have not been called. However, anyone on psych review has a slim chance of making the upcoming class. The psych department functions on a separate timeline and they do not have to meet deadlines for the July class. If anyone is on psych review, technically, you have until your exam expires to get the pass or fail. Not saying that it will take 4 years, but it probably means that the July class is a long shot.

Psych reviews;
From reading lots of prior posts anyone on review/hold for psych reasons should know why, if you don't you need to find out.
Many posters have said they can be something as simple as lost/misplaced paperwork that you THINK is there or that you asked someone to send in for you.
Always check that any necessary paperwork is IN your file, if it isn't there it is YOUR responsibility to get it there if you want this class.

Like someone said, you should know why you're on psych review. If your Doc didn't tell you, you should try to get a hold of him(or her). I was put on Psych. review until my Doc can get the Medical records sent to him that he requested. Of course this request can take a while for hospitals so I may not make the July class. Try not to get too stressed out. If you don't make it for July at least you'll have everything set for Jan.

Keep calling and make sure you get a human to leave a message with. There's a much better chance of getting a call back. I called like every ten minutes until I got a human and made sure to be VERY polite. Good Luck

The 7553 number is completely automated and the 7558 number is the scheduling department (written psych and interview). Did you call the 7558 number?

I called both. They can both be set to automated. I think when it's lunch or it's really busy they flip the automated switch. Thing is to call BOTH until you get a human...regardless of who it is...and ask them VERY nicely if they can take a message for your Doc (that did your oral), oh and throw in that it's a very important message, and be VERY polite. I've seen posts from guys that have dealt with some grumpy people. I myself have not... as long as you are extremely polite and don't waste their time they should be helpfull.

HEY.. So I wanted to thank you all for posting info that has been extremely helpful for me during this crazy process.. It's really helped me knowing I am not the only one anxiety stricken and really into getting this job.. I wish you all good luck!
Got a question.. Apparently I lost the paper with all the academy info I received at the mini-medical I went to on 6/12.. I've torn apart my apartment and everything in it.. I know sounds super irresponsible! but I was wondering if anyone could just give me the specifics on the exact Queens College location and what exactly I need to bring.. I know black pens are essential.. but I can't remember the amount for the two money orders needed..
Please if anyone could help me I would appreciate it.. I was thinking I would go back to Lefrak and ask them for another copy, but they may think I am a total idiot..
Cheers!

I'm assuming you're talking about the long sheet titled "Instructions for Candidates who are notified to apper for appointment"
This is the info:

Business attire. (Don't think I need to explain furthermore, use logic)
REQUIRED MATERIALS:

1 $9.00 USPS Money Order
1 $5.00 USPS Money Order
2 Ball point black pens
1 Clipboard for writing

Ok so tonight I was coming home from the beach.. this guy gets on my *** so i accelerate and change lanes and using the blinking. So i get pulled over and the guy tells me I'm following the other guy to close. So i get failure to signal and following to close tickets? I know i have to tell my BI, but is this going to prevent me from entering the academy. I'm not trying to sound like negative or anything but this guy was a *****. I told him that I am on pace for the academy and I'm unclear what I did. I believe a warning if i did something would of be sufficient.
any advice?

It's kinda of funny since I can say we're all waiting to get into the academy and a couple of weeks into the academy we're all going to be counting down to the day we leave the academy lol.

damn, I know you can't have any open tickets against you or lawsuits or any of that and you do have to report it to your BI. It might not let you go into the academy since you got two tickets but I'm not sure, I wish you the best of luck.

Hopefully, they might just tell you that they can let you in as long as you pay off the tickets before the start dates. Who you got pulled over by a State Trooper or Park police? I've been slowing down on my driving trying to avoid any interaction with the police until the start date. lol

I remember we had 3 during my mini medical. two of them were very good looking and when both of them walked across the room you saw all the guys head turn, it was one of the funniest things ever.

:) have to go with the one that's going to be paying my bills soon. Plus I have a feeling I'm not going to get on with them on my first try, let's see what happens on Monday. I'll be happy with the NYPD if I don't get NYSP. NYPD will be a great learning experience, next thing you know I might make sgt in a couple of years or something who knows.
