the BI was the last thing i have to do.. the psycologist told me that the Bi will tell me how i did.. I am surprised yours didn't. I think the fact that you are still scheduled for things means you did ok. Did your BI tell you that everything was ok Background wise or do they not tell you that either?

thanks for the reply bro...
everyone is telling me it doesn't matter which way i go because if i have enough drive and determination (which i do), i can get/do both in my life
if i pursue the july academy, put off school.. that means years from now is when i can expect to go back and finish my bachelors
but this school i've tried TWICE to get into and now im finally in... after nearly 2 years at a CC, i am finally back into a 4 year reputable school... i can always do the cop thing after, but i really want to be a cop right now.
maybe i should just flip a coin? lol :(
sigh
I was in your shoes this time last year, I decieded to finish and put LE on hold, I don't regret it at all. I would just suck it up and finish. I worked full time and went to school and let me tell you it is not easy and my boss bent over backwards to help me. I can only imagine how hard it would be to work as a PO and finish school. Imagine you have court during your finals, what would you do then? If you got into your dream school I say go for it and get your degree. It will be a huge weight off your shoulders and then you can put all your effort into getting into LE. Good luck with whatever you choose.

My BI has not told me anything, I was told by one of my references that she called him yesterday. I met with her about 3 1/2 weeks ago.

If that is the case i believe that they dont tell you anything until a few days before academy...

Do you believe if there was a problem she would inform me as opposed to continuing the process?
Should I still give my present job a heads up?

I wish i had a better answer for you.. i wish i knew man.. I would tell your employer just so they know and you dont screw them... In my opinion if you are goign through the other parts of the preemployment than I would assume your investigator hasn't found anything bad yet.... I dont know why but they wait till the last minute to tell you... waiting is the hardest part

I could have been a cop in 2005, but I was accepted into Stony Brook, and decided to finish my education. I just graduated this past friday, and feel the wait was worth it. Go to school, you could always use the support of that bachelors in case of anything.

My BI had told me to give him a call "a couple of days" after the psych and he would let me know how I did. I guess it would all depend on your BI, and how much they liked you (?). But as they've said to this point, no news is good news (unless you are on review).

Hey guys whats going on!
I just joined the forum, and look foward to typing away with you guys. I am attempting to join the NYPD starting with this JULY class. I started my process early april, and have done everything
Medical
Written Psych
Oral Psych
JST
Meeting with BI
Now I see that some of you already know if you cleared the psych, how could I find that out? Or is it pretty much cleared if I am still in the process?
I have a really bad driving history (violation wise) and my BI has made me obtain a letter from my insurance company stating that their is no claims pending against me, and also required me to take a Defensive Driving course in which I did this past sunday. Did anybody else have this problem? I really hope I get in, as I feel this is the only thing pushing me back, because I am assuming that if something were wrong with your background check they would have already contacted me. Or am I wrong?
I have my Mini Medical scheduled June 4. I look foward to it.
My understanding which I may be wrong is that you wouldn't be going to the mini-medical if you were tied up with anything. As for the phone calls that means they are investigating you which means you are a likely prospect for the position. You do not know anything until a day or two before for an invite to be sworn in. At the mini they will tell you DO NOT QUIT YOUR JOB! If you want to be nice you can give a heads up to them, depending how nice you are and how you were treated as an employee. If you don't get the job your relationship might change between you and your boss. Good luck.

If you want a federal job whether it is FBI, CIA, DEA etc... you need at least a Bachelors, a federal law enforcement job is highly competitive. how many more credits do you have to go?
2 years (i kept changing majors :()
i knew about the BS requirement for federal jobs... i guess i just wanted to get as much law enforcement experience as possibleI decided to finish my degree first, if not I would have went in this Jan that just past, finish your degree, the NYPD isn't going anywhere.
yea you're right and i knew this too
nypd aint going anywhere i should finish my degree while i can
thanks guys.. looks like i'll mail my withdrawal form tomorrow morning.

YUP, some time last month. I'm not worried about that since I get along with 3 of my neighbors and the other one I've never met and two out of the 3 are retired PO's

Can someone please explain to me the importance of knowing the dates of your employment history? I was put on psych review for not knowing the dates of work for my employers. With that being said, the lady who conducted my oral freaked out on me for it. Since high school, I have worked for at least 15 companies whether it be for a day or years. How am I suppose to remember all that consider social security doesn't give the dates on the printout.

Hey new guy to this forum just had a couple questions. I was just wondering if anyone could tell me how long you have to walk a beat before you can move into a specialized unit such as ESU or narcotics? How do you go about doing so if you don't have any connections or "hooks" in the nypd? Another question I have is how realistic is it to live in or around NYC with a family?, can one afford it with the cost of living being so high? Is there any NYPD cops on this forum that could answer this question for me...is it worth going over to NYPD? I've heard that you getted treated like crap, the pay sucks and if you don't know anyone you will be walking a beat the rest of your career. How close to the truth is all that? Thanks for anyone who can respond to my post.

1. The NYPD is a big department you can get promoted and move in and out special units without any hooks if you work hard at it, but having a hook might make it a little easier.
2. You do get treated like crap by the city and the people
3. If you're single you can live off your starting salary maybe a nice apt if you get a roommate or two. 35k might be decent in NC but that's nothing here in NYS or NYC.
4.If I was you I would look at other PD's in NC if they're hiring or go out west if you can or would like too, but if not you can still apply to the NYPD
Even if you look around in this forum plenty of people are going in for a couple of years because they want to move into FED LE or just want to get their foot in the door and then try to move on into another PD, I'm on the same boat as them. You'll also see a lot of people on the streets that feel the same way, that's why so many NYPD officer apply for SCPD NCPD NYSP MTAPD PAPD

The first two questions no one can really answer, because you will never know in which patrol borough you will be place in, but you can work 40+hours a week. But the first couple of days out the academy and after you're assigned to your patrol borough or pct, you will have orientation and that's about what anyone can tell you. The academy is pretty good training from what I hear, but I'm pretty sure you will figure out a way to survive the concrete jungle that NYC is.

When I went to see my BI in BK, I had a 6:30am apt. I left my house at 4:30am and when I was half way there I was stuck in a accident because people can't drive. So I called him up and I was like "I'm going to be late because there's a accident and I'm stuck in traffic" he was like "the accident is pretty bad, it's all over the radio, Just take your time and call me when you're around the corner".

Same here I had a 8am in BK coming from Nassau left at 6:15. BQE was locked down which rippled to the LIE, I called at 7:10 saying I'm stuck in traffic and I was told when I get there, I get there. She was cool with it. I got there at 10:00 almost 4 hours of stop and go. I'm sure she didn't expect 10:00. I left that day at 5:00pm it was a long day. Next time I take my motorcycle! You can never guess, but always expect traffic!

I'm going for my medical tomorrow. Anybody who has done the medical recently have any info on what to expect? I took the written in nov.07 and i just re-opened my case on tuesday. The woman at apd said they start from the earlier tests to appoint people into the academy but even though my test is recent and I'm starting the process now, as long as everything goes oko I should be making into the july academy. Hopefully she is right.

They go by exam and list number when making the calls, I'm from exam 4022 back in 2004, so I'll be in the first few crowds getting called. at the medical all you be doing is paper work waiting more paper work more waiting more paper work more waiting, vision test, hearing,EKG, and at the end the one foot shuffle on your boxers, then more waiting then more paper work then more waiting then more paper work and then more waiting and then the mini medical where they shave your hair from your leg or hair wherever they can get it from.

So it sounds like a long day. 6-8 hours I'm guessing? I've heard numerous times that they will be short people so anyone with a good or, passable backround will have a shot for July if they've started the process by now. Sounds reasonable to me.

Well I am finally back in the game . Next week friday I will be going to reopen my case in Queens, my BI is currently on vacation for 2 weeks. Its ok because I still have to wait for a letter from my insurance company. I just wanted to ask when they review your drivers record do they take into cosideration that the MVA's that you have been involved in are not your fault ? In June of last year the front bumper of my Expiedition was ripped off by some kid that only had a learners permit ( He told his mom he was getting chinese food in Baldwin and got into an accident at the Nassau county fair. lets just say his folks were not happy! ) the NCPD officer gave him a ticket for operating a motor vehicle without a licence. Then this year on valentines day an elderly gentelman was backing out of his parking spot right after I had already backed out of my spot, and smacked into the bumper of my Escape ( I guess that was his way of saying happy valentines day?).

no, everyone leaves at the same time. You have to remember that the officers there are getting paid, so they are going to milk every single minute of it. When I went for my medical all the stuff we did could have been done in 2-3hours. Instead we started at 3pm and didn't leave until 9pm.

I haven't found the parking at Lefrak to be that bad at all, been there 3 times so far. They have a garage right there, but it is expensive ($17 for up to 8 hours I think).

LMAOOOOOOOO. At least you made a new friend at APD. If you can't get an official transcript by Monday bring an unofficial just in case, but you do need the official transcript for your BI, the parking at lefrak is not bad since there's a parking garage next to the post office and the pizza place, save yourself the trouble and just park in the parking garage. Yes you should sneak in some protein bars or something.

Yea, I did my medical back in march. We were done by 3pm, but you have to remember its crunch time now, there are tons of people being rushed through the process. When he went for his medical last week they had a total of 68 people.

Hey is APD still telling you that you get tuition reimbursement up to like 15,000? There was so much talk about that when we got hired in January and APD even handed out newspaper articles on it at my mini medical.
Once in the academy, no one knew a thing, no one got a dime, and it all about just fell off the face of this earth.
It would be pretty messed up if they STILL advertise it.

Yep. It was told to me that I would receive $3k a year for tuition reimbursement.
Also, why is EVERYONE parking at the garages for $15-20 a day? I just parked on the street in the residential areas about 2 blocks over.

That is rediculous that they are still talking about that reimbursement because it hasn't been put into effect. We talked to the PBA about it and they were against it (I believe there was an article published about this a while back).
I will double check with the guys in my company that were waiting for this remibursement, but last I heard (middle of last week) there was no money, and no word on if its even happening at all.

There was someone who asked during the mini-med last week and they said it was still in action and to apply during or after the academy. If nobody is every told the detectives there I guess they will continue with what they know. Someone should keep them up to date with a easy memo or email. I guess unless your told or ordered nobody will do anything as a manager or boss. I guess it falls on the commanding officer to inform his staff or team?

My BI told me to log on at her desk in front of her. I wrote that I had one. I forgot where, but somewhere it does ask you if you have an account. I wasn't hiding anything, so I gave the address on paper. Yeah, I was told to log on at her desk in front of her. Probably no to rewarding to look at it. She probably thought I would have drunk, racing or women all over it. The whole time it was like I was guilty until proven innocent instead of vice-versa. I had 7 months of nothing on my SS report and she said she has to assume that I was selling drugs if I cannot prove source of income. Someone told me I should file a complaint and have my BI switched calling me a drug dealer if I couldn't prove otherwise.

Your BI doesn't like you lol. I told my BI I had facebook and he didn't even bother checking it. That's kind of extreme of her calling you a drug dealer, but I wouldn't pick a fight with a BI tho. next thing you know you'll be on investigative review until next year.

I just felt she was trying to give me a hard time. I know they are supposed to and are not your friend but she went out of her way. She made me sit there and write about 20 essays(really about 20!). I was the only chump doing it. I believe she was trying to make me walk! Why I became a EMT, Why I have a tattoo, why was my car involve in a hit and run without me even being there and it went on and on about nothing, An essay for every civil, state job I ever applied for(Court, Corrections, etc.) this was for nothing!. Anyone else have to do this?? I was all alone in a big room doing this as the super pushed a broom past my feet. Nobody else was doing this! Karma baby, she's probably on desk detail for her attitude from something else and this is her revenge back. She was not a happy camper and should not be in people relations period especially for the hire process. No love what's so ever for a possible future co-worker. Real **** attitude! Think of it more as exceptions. The more exceptions you have, the more of these personal statements you are going to have to write. If you only have one, you fill one, if you have 90, you're doing 90. I thought I was pretty straightforward with all of my info, but I guess not. I had to do the civil service, accidents, etc. They're just doing their job. If she called you a drug dealer, that is wrong though. She might have been just trying to get a rise out of you to see how you will react. You're going to have people saying a lot worse stuff than that to you otj.

It was asked for in the APD-5. If you have nothing to hide, you should be fine. If you do, shut it down, or take it off now, because they will look.

get rid of all the "hook up" sites.
myspace
adult friend finder
facebook.
just get rid of them.
delete the account.
you will have plenty of time to play after you graduate the academy. the sites will not help you, and only serve as a means to question your character.

That's only a little taste of it. Even my uncle tells me that the officers get treated like crap, I had to write the 49 I think is called (personal statement) for every single civil service test I took and about my scar on my leg.
Thanks I don't feel so bad anymore. I thought it was just me. I thought I was special!

Isn't this for talking, ranting and questions. You have nothing better to add. Yeah, my pillow is so wet! Maybe your right. Most people with a education tell me I will not like it unless I like getting told what to do by people with degrees but still clueless. A degree does not make a good cop it's more about how you process things. They just about give degrees away. This would be my second career. I'm not doing this for the money or badge or gun thing. I volunteer with Fire and EMS and I enjoy helping people very much and will continue to do so. I'm that guy that comes with the overturn, legs crushed at 3 in the morning. While others are running out, were running in. So don't tell me about crying. I have no worries. Not used to dimwit people in charge of me. When I spoke to the sergeant because the BI couldn't understand something he understood me perfectly and told the BI what is the problem? I'm not begging or crying for the job. I'm just telling you this BI was NOT on my side. She had a real crappy attitude. I want the job period and your right I will suck it up until the decision is made on their part. 8 out of 10 are alright in this process. I just keep getting the 2. This is the last month. Will see what happens. Enjoy your retirement. I guess I have no more questions being I'm just about waiting so I'm out! Good Luck and hope to see everyone a Queens College.

H.S was 12 years ago! lol) and i think they charge you by how many years you need. Also i hear all you guys refering to the one foot shuffle in your boxers and being first in line so you don't wind up with man *** in your faces when you bend over, does anyone know what to expect as a female? i know it's the same routine but i'm sure they split up at some point from the guys rite? and also are you all dismissed as a group? or do you leave as you finish?

My BI said from high school, which was about 10 years. If I remember correctly, it was about $30. Just clarify with your BI, but the Lt's at the other events said from HS. You are not going to want to do it twice, or not haveevrything correct at this point bc you will only hold yourself up. Make sure you have everything, and your BI will be happy.

They charge you by the years, if I was you just to be on the safe side I would ask for the last 12years if they have it. They females in the room do everything seperate from the guys, for example when I went for my medical all the females did their vision, hearing, blood pressure,EKG and the one foot shuffle first after they were done with half of the stuff they started with us the guys. unless you are put on review for anything you will leave as a group.

After the initial medical you get an appointment for a mini medical. At the mini-med you update your information. Such as moving, tickets, arrests, getting fired, starting a new job, new phone number, marriage etc. I don't think you will need a new drug test since it will be less than 3 months since your last one.
After that you wait for the phone call...............I am in the waiting stage now.

Regardless, watch what you put on your myspace page. Especially since the bank-robbing cadet/rookie incident, they're watching people's myspace a bit more closely, from what I've heard. Don't put "PIG" as your occupation, or post too many pictures of yourself doing keg-stands and taking hits out of a gravity bong.

You must be asking for something other than what the BI wants...all you have to do to get your earnings report is go to the Social Security office with your checkbook and wait in line. They pull it out of the computer and print it on the spot.

Yea that's the name of the building, so that means for the first two or three days bring tons of change to feed the meter, The place shouldn't be too hard to find since all you have to look for is for a line of people in suits and instructors yelling at people up and down the line.

well u can feed the meter for up to six hours, so hopefully that should be enough time.. ugh klapper hall sucks.. its a nice building but its impossible to find where u are going once inside..
the building itself is easy to find just walk straight from kissena boulevard into the main entrance... the building is offset from the rest.. the maps wont help you because you need a rocket science degree to read them.. just look at the signs when walking by the buildings.. thats the best advice i can give you

What should I expect besides being there until 9 pm?

From my own experience in the Academy, I'd go with the Bates. They are ridiculously easy to keep shiny; I probably only shine my shoes every week or two, if that. Black polish on, horsehair brush for a minute, old sock/t-shirt for a minute, done. A quick (as in ten seconds) buff with an old sock every day or so keeps 'em glossy for the Muster Deck. If they get dirty, quick wipe with a wet rag, wipe dry with same old sock/t-shirt, and you're good to go.
Other people in my company have the Converse, as well as the Five-Star version of the uniform Oxford. They either shine them constantly, or cheat and use that little wax-polish-sponge-liquid thing every day before muster. That liquid crap builds up on the shoes and eventually ruins them. You can see the people that've used it all Academy long, because their shoes have looked like garbage since about a month in.
Both the Converse and the Five-Stars are good shoes, but you're going to have to work a lot harder at keeping them looking sharp than you would with the Bates.

Hey guys quick question. Especially for ItIsWhatItIs. I'm going to New York the 9th-12 for the Quest program. It's tough getting all the paperwork together. What do I absolutely NEED when I meet with my BI the 11th? I mean, can I send the rest of the things as I get them or will that hold me up in the process? I just got my packet last week and I'm freaking a little as to how to get everything done right so I can start in July.
Thanks

You won't need them until at least a few weeks in, when you get your awful gray shirts. You'll be in business attire until then. The instructors will inspect you and look at your shoes even when you're in business attire, but they're not looking for anything crazy...just have clean, shined dress shoes. Don't go blow money on new ones if you've already got a pair or two of decent, conservative dressy shoes.

Honestly, that's the worst attitude I've ever heard. There's plenty of people that really want this job like myself. And if you're going to say you meant "make" as in not able to go for that particular day, it's still just as bad.

relax buddy...no need to get nasty... I have no affect on whether or not you get the job, that is determined on whther or not you are qualified. . The way i phrased the question was probably bad.
What If a person is presented with another opportunity and may not be able to accept the position. How do they go about about declining the offer but stay active on the list? This is just a hypothetical but it is good to know because sometimes things happen that are not forseen.
By the way just because someone does not go to the academy doesn't mean that they dont want the position.

Yea dude you shouldn’t really snap like that. The truth is many of us have other opportunities and are undergoing other processes with other agencies, or have major problems going on in our life (lost of family, unable to take a pay cut at this moment) It’s not disrespectful or having a bad attitude just because we aren’t sure what rout to take in life.
You should definitely call if you decide not to go. I don't think they will care either way because I have talked to many people who are under going the process right now, who were accepted and just didn’t show up. Now they are welcomed back with open arms. Its courtesy and respectful to let them know you will not be taking the job offer at this time. The fact is either they will not fill up the class so you aren’t affecting any ones chances OR they will fill up the class and when you don’t show up or if you respectfully call, the next person will be lined up for the next day or backfill.

I understand what your saying bro I don't want to come off like ia m yelling at you either, Its not like that. I was just saying things arent always cut and dry. I also understand why it would agervate a person who is so devoted to something watch another person turn their back on it.

I completley understand too and I apologize if it seems like I am turning my back. I was just asking as a hypothetical.. because something MAY happen and I want to do the right thing. Also just because I dont take the position does not mean I am less devoted to it... sometimes things happen. I am just as devoted as everyone else.. i dont do things half A$5ed. :) thanks for the help.. i guess I can call up APD.. altho they are real nasty so I was trying to get an answer here because you are all very nice. I had a friend drop out during the testing phase and then he debated whether or not he wanted to re-open his file. I know for a fact that it's possible to re-open a file and your exam should be valid for a few years. Hope this answers your question a bit better.

I had a similar issue. I lived in Nassau, where I had a couple of my tickets, and went down to the Traffic Court. I talked to the officer there, and they were able to give me a complete listing of every ticket I ever had. My BI was actually surprised to see that I did that, and said that I was the first person who ever got that for him. I did the same, but the trick is. Lets say you got a ticket in Suffolk county, you have to go to the Suffolk county traffic court and get it for them, if you got one in Nassau county you have to go to Nassau county traffic court and get it from them. at least that's how the person that gave me my disposition explained it to me.

Just a plain black duffel bag will do the job. If you don't have a suitably plain one, go to Wal-Mart's luggage section and get one there. Don't spend a lot on some freakin' huge Underarmor bag or whatever, because you'll beat the crap out of this bag and you're only using it for a few weeks.
For Queens College, Brooklyn College, or wherever they're having the three-day "hiring detail" for this class, you'll be instructed to bring a clipboard, pen, and not much else (other than things like passport photos, DL, etc.). Don't bring a bag to the hiring detail unless you want to get barked on. Don't worry, they'll give out a sheet saying just what to bring when you go to your mini-med.
For the first day of "real" Academy at the PA itself, bring the big duffel, a notepad or notebook, pens, pencils, and that's about it. You'll receive your Student Guide and Patrol Guide pretty quickly, maybe that first day. Those will rapidly fill your duffel. ;) Your company's instructor (OCI) will tell you what kind of notebooks and materials he/she requires, since each is a little different (some want you to have red pens handy, some want certain color highlighters, certain kinds of notebooks, etc.). Your gym instructor will do likewise - some of them want you to bring in composition notebooks for nutrition logs and whatnot, some don't. All luck of the draw.
As for gym clothes, don't bring stuff the first day at the PA unless told to do so...I don't recall us having to have any gym gear until the first full week at the Academy. They'll give you a deadline to get your gray t-shirts and sweatshirt with your name and company number on it, and until then you'll wear plain white t-shirts that you've written your name and company number on with a black Sharpie.

The paper at the mini medical all it says is bring the two money order, black pens, clip boards. Nothing about passport pics, Thank you for the heads up and all the info.

No problem. The passport pics they'll tell you about on the first day; go ahead and get about ten, in business attire. A lot of the forms you'll fill out early on require you to staple a passport photo onto the sheet.
