Drug Enforcement Administration to Hire 200 Special Agents

DEC 27 -- (Washington, DC) – Today, Michele M. Leonhart, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Acting Administrator, announced that the funding provided in the Consolidated Appropriations Act, 2008 (H.R. 2764), will allow DEA to lift an agency-wide hiring freeze that was instituted in August 2006.

“This is an important and most welcome development,” Leonhart said. “With this much-needed funding, DEA will be able to fill 200 Special Agent positions, as well as many vacant Intelligence Analyst and critical support positions. This legislation sends a strong and encouraging message to all of us at DEA as we continue our worldwide drug law enforcement mission.”

H.R. 2764, which was signed by the President on December 26, 2007, provides funding for fiscal 2008, which began October 1, 2007.

Does anyone know if they are planning on accepting applications anytime soon or are these 200 agents to be hired already from the pool who have completed everything?

Has anyone heard anything about this outside this post on the DEA website?

The people hired will be the ones well into the process already, who were on the verge of being hired, before the freeze.

Those applying now, can expect a wait of from two to five years, I imagine, before being given a yea or nay.

There is a class of approximately 40-50 guys and gals in Quantico right now, who will graduate in early February. They were all called in from a pre existing list before the hiring freeze.

Just found out that these 200 "new agents" are going to be all internal hire, meaning that these guys and gals are already working for DEA as Diversion Investigators, Analysts and such. Apparently DEA spent the hiring budget on something else but it needs to show Congress they hired people, so they just upgrading their own.

Some of the 200 will be internal hires. But, not 200 or anywhere close to that, unless something like that just came out.

So can you still apply to the DEA while they are in a hiring freeze? And then theyll just put your record on file until they start hiring agents again, or how does that work?

I think the current hiring pool is so large that they have quit taking applications for them moment.
