View Full Version : MTA/Metro North
I didn't see a thread on MTA/Metro North, so I thought I'd start one. I saw on their website they are having a test in April 2008. Does anyone here know anything about them?

I know that it's a pretty good agency to work for. I started there hiring process in August, but they put me hold until July 08' class.

I signed up for the test but I hear it is very hard to get hired.

Yea its a lottery system in the hiring process...I passed the exam in 2004, physical, panel interview, and now recently going through the background inv...but just remember the fact that even if you pass everything your not guaranteed to get called up for the following steps of the process or an academy class.
Overall I've heard good things about the MTA Police and you can work anywhere from down in NYC, to parts of eastern upstate NYS to southern Connecticut...

It's a great job. Tons of money coming into MTA from Homeland Security due to terrorism, which in turn means virtually unliminted OT if you're willing to work. Good luck, gentlemen.

I believe they can also live in PA and NJ.
Good agency and good cops. If I were to go to Penn station in NY, I wouldnt mind working for them.
Being able to live in NJ would be great. It seems like they have lower RE taxes than NY suburbs and more house for your money. PA even better, though long commute.

have to be a resident of CT or NY. As an MTA PO you are only commissioned in NYS and the state of CT.

No. That is incorrect. I asked one of our Amtrak cops in NYC. MTA cops can live anywhere they want. Some live in NJ and PA others in NYS and CT.

try asking a MTA COP. I know a few and they told me the same thing. You have to live where you are commissioned.

Unfortunatly I dont go to NY very often however it was posted on an MTA police board. They do not have residency rules like TBTA who fall under the city civil service guidelines. Here is the direct quote which you can read at transitcop.com.

I put in to take your department's test. Just a quick question. But what are your residency rules? Is it just NY and CT?

We don't have a recidency rule. There are M/O/S who live in PA, DE and VA I hear.

well your wrong and they are wrong.....just messing around. The ones I talked to were on since LIRRPD which is long island rail road, so I guess they were telling me the hiring req's of when they were hired. No big deal though.

I know the MTA sends their guys through the city academy. Anyone know if you must attend even if already a certified PO? I have heard of this happening in the past, but on the new exam application you are asked in you are a certified cop and if so, what academy you attended. It seems kind of ridiculous to have someone who is already certified retrain with the city especially since many of them will end up working outside the city.

if you attended and graduated, you won't need to go again. because the MTA pays for the training. So unless they want to fork over more money for training they won't send you.

Yeah, I just know for a fact that they have made certified POs attend the city academy if they were not from the NYPD. Does it make sense? No. But I thik we all know how that works in LE.

If you are already a PO in NYS, but not an NYPD academy grad, will you're certification still work?
Not on the list, yet, I'm just curious. HAHA

No they only leteral for NYPD guys since they put you through that academy anyway. I know of a few guys from other jobs that had to go to the NYPD academy for the MTA.
