NYPD equipment questions (radio)

I figured I'd get more feedback in this section than in the Duty Gear section..

I am in the market for an ultra portable radio and read that the NYPD officers carried the Vertex Standard VX-800 series radios. Is this true? I just wanted to make sure first..

Anyway if this is true, how are they? Reliable? Any problems with them?
