I know that the state of new york approves 30 paid military days for actively drilling weekend warriors, but I have a few questions as to how that is actually implemented. If any of you are going through this or know someone that is, any info will be greatly apprecaited!

Basically, how is your schedule for the week of that weekend drill for the month? Do they try and schedule your work so that I still work 5 days NYPD and do 2 days on the weekend which is my "off" time anyway to save money (and thus not allowing me to double dip for 2 days), or do they work with you to benefit you more on those days that you actually drill? Not sure if I wording this clearly, but with the way the salary is now, I'd rather make full use of the whole batch of 30 paid military days each year.
Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind working as much as necessary at all, but I want to take advantage of everything the system offers, because the system sure as heck will do the same.

Also, I know with the mobilizations that I won't lose the job and I'll gain seniority, but here's somewhat an off the wall situation: If after 2-3 years I go on active duty full time, will they still hold my job/seniority for the 5 years they advertise? Or how would that work?

Just brainstorming a few possible situations and figure this'd be the best place to ask these questions, as I'll be going into the academy in january :D

Thanks!

All reservists may take up to five years of military leave from the NYPD upon presentation of proper military orders from their respective branch of the military. All time served on active duty counts toward longevity on the Police Department upon their return.

Police Officers that are also active reservists are allowed 30 paid calendar days per year. In addition to their allotted vacation time. During this period, they will receive full pay from the Police Department as well as being paid by the military.

The way it works for example: Let's say you work Monday thru Friday to keep it simple. You work at the PD Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and are scheduled to work Thursday and Friday as well but have military drill. You work Monday thru Wednesday and go to drill Thursday and Friday and get paid for both.

What sucks is, is when you use your 30 days for military duty but have more than 30 days worth of drills, like having a bunch of MUTA 5's which means you could do more than 30 days drill in a year. Then you either take the excess time out of your pocket or use your vacation time or personal time.

You normal duty schedule will not be altered, for example, no swapping of day to suit your military time. You work your normal schedule and do your military drills. They don't always fall or work out the best every year.

If you have the proper documentation and orders showing your deployment and active duty time NYPD will hold your position and still gain seniority. Just contact NYPD and get a copy of their policy on military leave. It's public information and seeing you are going into the academy maybe you should ask your background investigator to get you a copy of the policy so there are no surprises. Also you may want to go into the IRR while going through the academy. You start missing days while in the academy and they will toss you.

Thank you for the information!
Somewhat off the wall question, IF I go full time AD (i.e. leave the reserve component and sign an AD contract for say 3 years), will I still be able to hold on to the job the same way as if I got mobilized with the reserve/guard unit for the duration of the contract? not sure if that will be treated the same way or not...
