What is the policy on MA hiring out of state laterals?

You could try a non-civil service department. In MA, you must be in a MA civil service department to lateral into another civil service department (ex-lateral from Springfield into Boston PD). As far as out of state, no civil service department will hire you. You have to take the civil service test for the department you want to work for. Also, most departments have a 1 year residency requirement. You MUST have lived in that city/town one year PRIOR to the civil service test date. If not, you will be placed on the non-resident list. You will hardly ever get hired from a non-resident list. There are just way too many people ahead of you. I'm not a trooper, but I'm pretty sure the MA State Police do not take laterals either. It has been stated on this site and others, MA is not a good state to try and get into a police job. There are usually very few openings and when there are, like I stated above, they hire directly from the civil service list. The CS test was given just a year ago, so I think it will be offered again in April/May of 2009. A non-CS department might hire an out of state lateral. The problem is, there are not many non-CS departments, plus the non-CS departments tend to be small. Two of the larger ones that I can think of are: Northampton PD and Amherst PD. I know there are others, but those are two of the bigger non-CS departments that I know of. Good luck on your search, but if I were you, I would look in a different state or stay where you are.

I know of a former NYC cop that transferred to a civil service PD anbout 1 year ago. Apparently they (civil service) are looking into it. If you are interested, PM me and I iwll get you some contact info.
