I took the test for NYPD recently and passed. I have always been interested in Transit. Does anyone have any info on how easy/hard it is to get in and what it's like if you do. Also, any perspective on how easy/hard it is to move into other areas of the department after being in Transit (e.g., is it looked down on).

my cousin was in TD he fvkking hated it. I personally do not know anyone who wants to work in transit. You go to work clean, and come home dirty from the hole. Your dealing with the homeless, turnstile jumpers all day long, pervs on the trains. If you ask for a TD you will get it, but good luck getting out of it.

I would not be crazy about dealing with homeless, but I do like dealing with the public. I guess that's the appeal.

ehh, you'd want to go to a precinct. for the first year or so you'll be on a foot post, and it doesnt get any closer to the public than that.

Good luck.

Transit is a great gig if you don't mind spending time underground. You will see less action than a busy precinct (and that includes "fun" action like gun runs, as well as not so fun family dispute after family dispute in disgusting roach infested apartments.)

However, transit does not have the overtime cap that precincts have which is currently 35 hours. That could be a huge plus for someone looking to come on to this job that does not live with mom and dad.

Contrary to what is posted above, it is not easy to get put into transit out of the academy. If you think you would like it, then put it down for your first pick. Also, there are just as many if not more skells roaming around street level than down in the hole.

Good luck.

One last thing as to the desirability of transit: A lot of new guys want more action so they prefer a precinct, but there are a number of guys I know who worked 10 or more years in a precinct, then put in to go to transit, and loved it.

Take that for what it is worth.

I'm not looking for a lot of "fun" action, though not adverse to it. The appeal of the job to me is helping people and giving them a sense of security, e.g., riding the subway at night, helping lost kids, etc... Avoiding the domestic squabbles makes Transit appealing in my mind.

I know a friend of mine who works for Transit and loves it. He said that he's with a closely knit group of cops he work with everyday and the overtime is tremendous.

My cousin is also a transit cop, in china town I believe. He pretty much hates it as well, but prefers it over regular street patrol. Also, he is plainclothes, so I guess that's a plus for some of you.

I made Transit my first & second picks on my "dream sheet" & never got them. I got my third choice, which is a precinct in Bklyn South. Love it there!!

My dad was an original NYC Transit Cop. I'm talking about back in the days way before the merger...

It all depends where you go.i was promoted to sgt in '96 and sent to a slow district. Not much action in the hole ,but my district covered 7 precincts.I learned a few things i had never dealt with before like lushworkers, serial perverts and some very orginized grafitti vandals.i learned that there were many perps who only committed crimes on the subway.i also got to fly to busier districts and worked with some great cops. Dists 1,2,4 and 33 are some of the busier/desireable places to work. If you take the job, don't stay in one place too long, move around and get all the training you can.I did and it paid off after i retired w/ good job!P.S-if you don't have a ba/bs get one!

Manhattan transit was my first pick on my dream sheet, I was just recently assigned to the task force their. No hooks/cranes either. I worked hard in the academy, maybe it paid off, maybe I just got lucky. Either way, word has it that only about 40 officers out of 800+ in this class got transit. We'll see on friday when I report for transit bureau training in brooklyn

40 out of 800 sounds pretty good. I'd heard from others that Transit was not even possible to get for rookies. I thought I had heard that if you do well (somewhere near the top of the class) in the academy you will get your choice of first assignments, assuming it's a place rookies can go.

transit is a great place to be, but you will not learn stuff you will learn topside. I love being in transit and would never give it up. the only problem is when you get promoted to sgt you must leave transit. if you dont mind not being involved with heavy jobs, go to transit... It is not easy to get there, either you have a hook, or you get very lucky.

Of course I'll go whereever they want me to, but I'm 40 (with enough active military service to qualify for the age waiver) and not looking to change the world. Transit sounds good if I can get it. The only thing might be that I might like to make Detective and it seems without working someplace with more action that might not happen. What do think?

One other thing I wondered about Transit is do you deal with a lot of people hit by trains? Even though I've been in the military for the last 7 years, I haven't seen the kind of gore I would imagine goes along with that. Not sure I really want that, but I guess that can happen with car accidents and other things too.

Don't get your hopes too high... The class that just graduated in Dec 2007 didn't get their top picks. ALL were sent to impact pcts and only a small number went to transit impact. Maybe things will be different for the next class, but you just never know.

I think I heard like...40 or 50 from the last class went to Transit? That's not too bad of odds, if you keep your grades decent and avoid getting cards pulled, CDs on your record, etc.
