Just letting everyone who took these exams know that I just called both civil service agencies and asked about when we will be receiving results:
Suffolk County: Results will be posted ONLINE on December 24th, 2007.
Nassau County: Civil Service official told me to expect them by August of next year (2008). They are waiting on the state to process them and will be sending letters out when they receive the scores.
Good luck to everyone and hopefully the Suffolk scores will be a nice Christmas present for you all (if you celebrate it of course). :)

No. The Suffolk exam that is being referred to was on June 9th and the Nassau Exam was in August I believe. The Nov 17th exams were not for the two counties above, as far as I know.

Do you think they will have the military make-up exam (Suffolk Co.) from August?

I have no idea about military make-ups but don't hesitate to call the Suffolk County Civil Service Commission. They actually pick up their phones in the first 5 tries, unlike the State .

The Towns and Villages are not guided by civil service law, therefore they don't have to hire off the list in order. The only requirement is that you pass the exam and get ON the list. Good luck.

Well I know I didn't score high enough to get a look at by Suffolk, but should I still be hopeful a 87.5 will be high enough to get a letter from Southampton Town? Or Riverhead for that matter? I'm in Flanders so I don't know if that could swing either way.

RE: Towns and Villages
They hire off the Suffolk list, but not in list order. They will almost certainly give preference to:
1. Residents of that specific town and/or village
2. Any part-time/seasonal officers, or current employees who have put some time in and also managed to get on the list.
Either way, good luck.

unfortunately, you miscalculated big time. I too have a 97.5, but there are 767 people with that same score. We are list # 105 and the people that scored 95 are #872. My only question is,the first years classes they put in, i assume they will want to process more than 100 people. When they dip into the 97.5's, do they call all 767 people, do they do a lottery, or how do they decide who is going first out of that group? Anyone have any info?
gbotj
12-31-2007, 11:02 AM
when they have more than 100 names to pull from off the same grade they put all the names in the computer and the computer pulls about 250-300 of those names out of the 767 (in your case).
So you have about a 39% chance of being called for the first group of the lottery for 97.5's.

the way it works is by a lottery system.
for example, they just called around 5k people to start processing.
so first they do the ppl with 100's and then lets say the next score is 97.5.
and they only need to get 800 people more for processing and there are 2,000 people with the score of 97.5, so they put all of those people with the score of 97.5 in a lottery and witdraw the 800 names that they need out of the 2,000.

These tests have all been changed through the years, don't let the score get you down, there is abosolutely no skill involved, these tests are made to hire minorities and let the counties play with who they want to hire.

How about we just hire the most qualified person for the job regardless of sex, race, etc?
When we lower standards for a certain group, waiver requirements, and hire people just to "diversify" is when an agency begins to go down the tubes.

So the agency goes down the tubes when you hire minorities huh? Ignorance , if that was the case and they didn't consider sex, minority, etc. All your workers will be White men and that's about it, it would not look right. I think we should all pay, but they do need to take consideration of some things. Hiring minorities ,sex does not make the agency bad , its the people who do no matter who they are.Just about anyone can go sour. Be careful what you say before you open your mouth,it will get you in trouble.

How about hiring the most qualified person? Best person for the job should not be hired based on race, religion or creed. This country has always been about hard work and being self made. Affirmative action is nothing but a racist system which in itself discriminates non-minorities. Quota systems that use race to include or exclude people are unfair. I've been in law enforcement over 8 years obviously you have not. How would you feel knowing that your partner got a low score on an entrance exam, in firearms and on the physical abilites, but was hired due to race??? I bet you would feel real safe knowing your life is on the line.
Cakes87
01-05-2008, 04:10 PM
yea, I wouldn't be too thrilled if I had a partner at any type of work that wasn't really the best man for the job. Maybe thats why so much stupid stuff happens in the work place.
ChrisF202
01-06-2008, 09:48 AM
Nyfinestgrl, I did not say anything about hiring minorities or females running an agency, all I said was that we we hired persons who may not be qualified for the job and just because they are Black, female, Hispanic, etc that in the end it often lowers the quality of the agency.
You cant argue with that.

01-06-2008, 10:31 AM
Chris,
I read you post on this topic. I think in all you have a point on having the best person for the job. You just have to remember how to put you words at first. Minorities in general definitely needs to be in every agency but iin a way equal to everyone else. Some exams are definitely unequal to some

First post and question... thanks to all who listen and post.
I did well on the written test and I am hoping for a 1st or 2nd round callback. I was wondering about the next rounds of testing. I don't see a problem with the physical, but I heard that the background check can get pretty hairy... that with so many people taking the test and scoring well they are extremely selective. I've had a few parking tickets, from back in college, and one expired registration. All of these were taken care of, but one was dealt with after I had recieved a threat of suspension. Also, my credit is pretty bad. My score is going up, but it was in the toilet not too long ago. So my questions are; do they even consider credit score in the background (which I've heard that they do, but I don't exactly trust hearsay), and also, are their background checks thorough enough that parking tickets will hurt me? Thanks.
gbotj
01-09-2008, 05:14 PM
parking tickets shouldnt hurt you, but they do look into your credit. I'm not sure on how much weight the credit check holds but I'm assuming it could cause for DQ.
Cakes87
01-11-2008, 10:25 AM
how much would it hurt if you got a speeding ticket when you were 16? Do they say like oh ok he was just a kid and he hasn't gotten one since or do they still use that against you.
Cakes87
01-11-2008, 10:38 AM
oh and do they count a speeding ticket if it was out of state?
gbotj
01-11-2008, 11:27 AM
these things dont automatically disqualify you. The only reason why they go through so many people is because so many people take the test, I mean 4000 people scored better than a 90. No other civil service test has that many, so theres going to be alot more with more serious background problems. A summonse isnt that big of a deal, its a violation not a crime. Things happen, just show remorse and your fine.
Cakes87
01-11-2008, 01:06 PM
ah ok as long as they dont auto disq me then good.
Joe23
01-11-2008, 01:38 PM
Thanks for the reply. Was a little shocked first hearing about the credit check... would hate to think of getting DQ'd for that. I have been making a conscious effort to raise the credit score up, not just for the background check but also for all the obvious reasons. If that's all I have to worry about then I should be okay.
Any word on if there will be a 2008 class?
gbotj
01-11-2008, 01:50 PM
they usually have classes at the end of each year, so 08's class would be in the last quarter.

You guys need to save that minority B.S. because that agency needs to get more diversed!
Not to get in a ****ing contest cause I do not know you but to make a statement to your above post
WHY?
Tell me why a department must hire people that 'fit the neighborhood"
So if its a city environment, they shoulda hire people from the projects, cause well they know what its like to live in the hood.
Or in a department on the north shore, they should only hire rich white kids from Upper Brookville or whatever north shore 'hoods?
I never understood that, oh yeah its reverse descrimination and I'll never understand that.
When I took the Suffolk test a few years ago, I had never scored below a 94 on any police test and had about 8 years police experience, hostage negotiator, FTO, instructor training, etc. But hey they scored me an 82.5
Its all in the little boxes checked on the application.
Like someone posted , just hire the most qualified people, NOT a black person or a female hispanic.

Does anyone know if the physical requirements for the accademy are different from the initial physical screening requirements?
gbotj
01-12-2008, 09:33 PM
yes, the requirements to graduate are 10% hire than the PAT.
what ever number it is to pass the PAT for example male 20-29 years old is 29pushups to enter academy to graduate you have to do 31 pushups, the run time is shorter and you have to do more situps (roughly 10% same as everything else).

So I scored a 95 on this test, I was excited but now the more I hear the less chance it seems I actually have.
I was told today that the last list only put in 3 classes with a total of 260 people off a list of 20,000+ people. I was also told that the last test people with a 92.5 had a list number in the 400s. Is any of this true? Thanks for your time.

The state may grade the tests by priority. If Nassau doesn't need the results back asap, then they may grade another dept who may need more officers first. It also may allow some time for more vacancies to open up within Nassau. Thats just my guess though. Just seems logical.
