Does anyone work for the Florida DOC?
What is the hiring process like? About how long does it take?

If your breathing they will hire you, you probably won't stay long, but they will hire you.

I have to say that getting a job in the Department of Corrections in the state of Florida doesn’t require a lot of qualifications in ones background. What it does offer is an honest days work with benefits starting in Law enforcement learning about the many different areas DOC can offer to somebody who wants it. Since the job does not pay well and career paths are slow, people stay long enough to get trained and follow a path to the county jails or becoming local police officers. Unfortunately, the Department does hire some misfits and people who never last, but on the other hand, these pompous local law enforcement jobs have strict background and polygraph requirements that sometimes make it impossible to get hired because the applicant was not the chosen one. All in all, I am proud to say I work for the DOC and if a young person wants to try a temp position in law enforcement before becoming certified, or an older person with a second retirement, this is the place to be.

I had my physical/medical completed in October and I'm still waiting for a call. I contacted the service center recently and they confirmed that they have my application, however, they are waiting for positions to become available??? Who knows what that means or how much longer.... Everything else during the hiring process was so fast to happen that I truly thought I would have been hired by now:confused:

I was under the impression that they were short everywhere. Maybe it is a geographic thing. Or it could be budget related due to cutbacks. I know that the local state prison is recruiting (Charlotte CI).

Who knows what's going on.... At this point, I'm really considering of starting the application process with Miami-Dade County Corrections to see what happens there... Hopefully doing this won't interfere with what I have completed with the FDOC already????

Although you have applied to the Department Of Corrections, please don't think they don't have any standards and will hire anyone and everyone. If you have something in your background, it has to be verified and you have to wait to get hired. It’s a shame that you’re given advice about a job you may end up enjoying. I was told I would hate the military and to run far away and I am glad I didn’t listen to half of those buffoons because the military was the best thing that happened in my life. If you decide that DOC is not right for you, suck it up, don't bad mouth the organization and move on. Its too bad people are given that bad advice, because the good people do leave and that is why some institutions end up with the schleps.
1) Apply online to the institution closest to you on the people’s first web site
2) After your application is in, follow up with a phone call maybe to the institutions recruiter.
This is a place to start a career (after HS) or start a second career. You can take it as far as you want.
Good Luck!

The problem with the State of Florida are the LOW wages. There is no STEP Plan. You are at the mercy of the Legislature. State employess received a $1,000.00 bonus last year and NO raise. I'm a 12 year veteran with FDOT and barely make over $36,000.00. Damn shame. People, do not waste your time with the State of Florida. Salaries are low and property taxes are going up, as well as, homeowners insurance. I have to work overtime to break even.

Well I finally turned in my paper work with Miami-Dade Corrections and have started the process with them. Still no call from the F.D.O.C. and I can't afford to keep waiting around...The BI from Miami-Dade advised me that chances are that the F.D.O.C will end up calling me in before the process with Miami-Dade is done... We'll see...

I absolutely agree with the crappy salaries that the state has to offer. What they do offer in return is a pension package that you are vested after 6 years. You say "big Deal" but it is a big deal. Look at your w2 statement you received recently and look at the bottom state contribution box. The state paid you a salary, 36k gave you 2 weeks vacation 10 holidays and since you are LEO, you use them on your time and comp time if you worked on that holiday. They gave you medical and dental worth 5k or more a small life insurance policy of 1 times your pay worth about $100 and they contributed to the pension fund worth another 5k. You can continue school on the state and allow them to pay for it. I don't know about your overtime or if you’re eligible for any, but all that added together makes you worth almost 47k. If your wife works, together you could get by O.K without getting rich. We all know this is the wrong field to be in making a decent lifestyle but think about those FHP guys working for peanuts and they are definitely underpaid but they are out there in the rain, accidents, 2am traffic stops....those men and woman are real troopers. DOT looked like and awesome field to get into but like I said in previous post, the local pompous LE feel they have the chosen field and if your not the chosen one, then you work like you and I.

Although you go through as a DOT Officer similar as the FHP,Stopping vehicles in accidents, checking weights log books and unexpected idiots behind the wheel, years ago this was the great state of Florida and having this job seemed right, but the economy of the state sets the stage for our salaries and potential earnings for the future. All I can say is its a great start for a career or something to suppliment one.

I started out in the DOC and while I agree it does not pay well it is a good place to start, like mentioned above good benefits. Like any job you have good and bad, I am now a Fed LEO with ICE.

If you don't mind living check-to check and working for private security companies on your off-duty then sign-up. the fact is it is not an agency you'll want to stay with. in florida you will be living in a trailer home( double- wide if you make sgt.) on what they pay. I'm with the feds now and alot of state officers get their minimum one year experience in law enforcement and apply for a gl-06 position starting at 40k in miami.
