I was talking to someone this evening that tells me that we might see nationwide interoperability in the future for our mobile computers. I would probably like to see that, although I suspect that it might take quite some time for this to happen. In my county, I can message any other PD, but I have no means to check the State Patrol to see what calls they are on. Does anybody here already have statewide interoperability for mobile computers?

No, but I've been thinking about starting an open-source project to make it easier.

I would love to see that, I think homeland security depends on it.

I don't see how it would ever be possible. Different agencies use different vendors for their communications equipment. We use a company called Tiburon but the city agency where I live uses something totally different. These programs might not be able to communicate/ one another.

I can't see a dept. who just spent a few million on a new set up spend a few more million to get on te same program as others. I'd love to see it happen though. It would definitley benefit eveyone.

it is highly possible because our agency has taken steps toward interoperability. all the agencies in our area can communicate with each other if need be in a disaster situation. if there are two agencies working a situation together those agencies can be linked together therefore each dispatcher from the agencies working together can talk to every unit from both agencies. it all has to do with homeland security (N.I.M.S.)

Kentucky State Police has setup a state-wide infrastructure where any dept that buys MDT/MDC can attach to the network. They are using MobileCop software and can see anyother officer in the state that is on. When it works. We are having some issues right now with the towers and it's connectivity but they are working on it.
I would say I'd love to see a national standard, but I thinkk a state standard is more important. It would be nice if all 50 states could have their own systems and then connect to NCIC together.

They can communicate with each other but the different vendors do not wish to. Its about keeping customers and $.

I suppose you COULD communicate MWS-to-MWS with another LEO/PO in another state if you knew the NLETS or NCIC ORI for the other officer's MWS and that they were on-duty AND logged-in.

Can you send NLETS or NCIC messages (sorry, I am not that familiar with either) from your MWS to an office terminal? We can send MWS-to-CPIC-terminal messages, again as long as we know the ORI.

I have not had any reason to send a MWS-to-NCIC/NLETS-terminal message; it would have to be relayed via RCMP INTERPOL, and they might do more to me that just frown on such messaging if I am just trying to arrange a coffee-break meeting with the Crosby ND Sheriff!

That's a huge undertaking and one that states are grappling with. I don't see it on the horizon. At the most you'll see data sharing that agencies submit but not live data on a national level. That's a long way off.

Just within our jurisdiction we have several different agencies each using different software. Ours is supposed to get a new upgrade to meet some of the new TLETS/NLETS requirements, but I really don't see how nationwide interoperability will be a reality - too many proprietary programs.

The most likely scenario is a "data warehouse" setup. Agencies would export data using the DOJ XML standard. We're doing this in MA.
