Hi fellow C/Os.

I've finally got myself an interview with the BOP. I've already been through the first step. And now I've got a panel coming up soon. Just curious, what kind of questions do they ask? Is it all job related? Or do they ask some off the wall questions too? I just kinda want to get an Idea so I'm not going in blind.

They will probably ask you a few things to gauge how you would respond to a given situation. Rely on experience, any training that you have taken. They may want to know what you would do for example, if the warden is taken hostage by an inmate. What would you do if an inmate propositioned you. What are your priorities during a call for assistance, as regarding an important post that you are manning, such as Control Center. They are basically judging overall correctional experience, or lacking that and having other similar experience, what kind of knowledge that you do have, and what kind of character you exihibit. Dress in a nice conservative suit, or slacks and blazer combination. Make sure you're presentable in all facets of appearance, (you know, grooming, pressed and cleaned clothing, shoes shined). Other than that just be yourself, and don't try to be someone else in the interview. Good luck!:)

They will ask the standard jail house questions. Are you willing to shoot a fleeing felon in the back. If you want the job, you will answer correctly. Remember your job is to protect the public. Nuff said. Also they might throw in a PC feel good one for you. The kind that says you are a feel good respect everybody on the planet type of BS question. Smile, say yes sir, relax and leave your balls at the front gate and you will do fine.;)

That was one thing I was kinda wondering, do they want balls out hard core or do they want a kinder gentler C/O?

Myself, I'm kind of in the middle. I'm not a total hardass, but I'm not a candyass either! I let the offenders in my unit know that all I want is a quiet, drama free night. If I get that, they can go about their day as normal so long as they don't violate the rules. They don't give me what I want. I go from C/O to Sirus the Virus! Thats when I start bunking them and cleaning the dorm. And if that don't work, I start shaking down hard core.

I let the offenders know, we can either have an easy night, or we can have a hard night, its up to them.

Sounds like you're probably going to be fine. Remember that each institution does have their differences, so if you can get a feel for the one you're applying for through anyone you know there, that would be good. Otherwise I think you have gotten good advice, and it sounds like through the forum you have a pretty good grasp on things.

From what you have stated you will do fine. Just remember no tune ups, no turbans, no motorola shampoos, no falling down the stairs accidently while handcuffed from behind. Basically no SOP in a DOC Penn type stuff.
Stay in the bubble and stay out of trouble.

no tune ups, no turbans, no motorola shampoos,

Not familiar with those. Guess I'll have to ask some of the old school C/Os. :D

I'm not that kinda officer anyway. With the way the system works these days. I'm sure it would look like the big bad prison guard beat the poor defenseless offender. Only time I ever lay my hands on an offender, I have a good reason and I back myself up with paperwork.

Not that I don't mindscrew them a bit. "Better watch your step fella, be a shame if you tripped and fell down the stairs wouldn't it"! :D
