Less than kenner. Most you'd be lucky to make $27K.

Eman, may I ask why you are looking into Louisiana? I see that you are in Michigan. One thing you will have to realize with applying to another state, is are you willing to travel more then once to conduct the hiring process?

Kenner does pay well, and yes so does Jefferson Parish, however the cost of living around New Orleans right now is extremely high and there are not many places to live, and yes Slidell is in the same picture.

Kenner, just like Slidell Police are municipal town, which means that are under civil service and that is where you would first start the hiring process by taking a written test.

Sheriff's Office employess are "at will employess" of the Sheriff, meaning the Sheriff can fire you for wearing the wrong color socks or for no reason at all.Just an FYI since you would be moving. Just by looking at their website, it states you must have a Louisiana drivers license and you must be registered to vote in the Parish. Another thing to look at, is the training. A lot of agencies will not send an employee to POST corrections/Police until they have completed a year.

Why don't you actually call them. Louisiana Sheriff's Offices and police departments dont actually advertise for positions. If you want a job, call or show up. Most Sheriff's departments is going to be "it's who you know" to get a road deputy position. However being a corrections deputy will not automatically get you a road slot. There are to seperate certifications for jailers/police in Louisiana.

Ditto to what irishlad said - corrections will be little to no help. You'd be better off getting on with campus police than corrections. Check out the levee board police, bridge police (CCC and Causeway), St T, Jeff P, Kenner PD, Harbor PD etc. I'd stay away from NOPD unless you just want all that drama in your life.

Most likely you will need a valid Louisiana Drivers License before applying as with most Louisiana Law Enforcement agencies.

I've been with St. Tammany for close to three years now. I started in the jail, and did a year and a half before I was able to transfer to the road. It was really difficult for anyone to get to the road from the jail during that time. However, they've since changed their practices. No one is hired straight to the road now unless you have prior experience. Now, when filling road positions, they pull from Court Security and the jail.

So, you're chances of getting on the road with us are greater, but it's still going to take a long time. Are you willing to put in that time in the jail just to make it to the road? I was, because working for STPSO was my goal. But, I'd recommend that you try to get on with a different agency for some road experience, then transfer to a higher paying agency (like us or JPSO) when you're ready.

Good luck!

The State Police pay pretty well, however, you are looking at almost (if not longer) a year hiring process. It took me a year and half to be hired

I'm in the process of applying for State Police. With the new pay bump, they are now the highest paid in the state. I'm also from Louisiana, currently living in Montana. Thanks to divorce, I'm trying to get back home around my kids. I've already flow there and back 3 times now. At $500+ to $700+ a pop, it gets expensive real fast. I just have the psychological and the PT test again left to do. I'm hoping to get in the academy scheduled for the end of February. If you have the money, go fo it!

While LSP pay has gone up, one thing you have to realize is that they do not receive the State Supplemental income, since they are part of the state. You can easily go to Kenner PD, Jefferson Parish SO and even NOPD and start off more then a state trooper. And just as the military dictates, as a trooper you must be able to work anywhere in the state. I noticed you are Border Patrol, why not finish your time out and get a decent retirement?

Ditto to what Irishlad2nv says - finish out your federal time and get a good retirement. LSP is ok, but that's about it, and the cost of living in Louisiana has gone up quite a bit....

One thing with many agencies around Louisiana is they say their starting salary is *30k, such as Lafourche, however, they are including the state supplemental income, which you only receive after you complete your first year and have gone to the POST academy. So take the supplemental income away for a year and you technically are starting off around 26K. They State supplement is a way for agencies not to pay their officers/deputies a decent salary.

On another note, if you are looking at agencies in Louisiana, look at the raises they get, each year you are on the job. Some agencies, you only go up a few hundred dollars, salary per year. So if you start working for $2000 monthly, after 10 yrs, you may be only getting paid $3000 monthly. And yes most Sheriff Offices pay a monthly salary, not hourly, etc. Just be careful.

yes but our parish issues the statepay from the first day if you sign a contract that says you will attend the academy within the year or you have to repay it. We get issued a merit raise for 600 a year and it goes up 2000 for sgt lt etc. We also gets lots of differential pay for training college etc but then again we got somthing in our bayou water cause 4 cops here got shot within a 6 month period so much for a quiet little city. Good Luck wherever you choose

irishlad2nv
12-12-2007, 06:18 PM
Again, it still is only 30K a year and if you don't pass POST, etc then you don't actually get the supplement. I find that weird that they have you start the pay right off the back, being that you don't even qualify for the supplemental pay until you attend POST and have completed one year at the agency. I still think they need to start LE off with a higher pay in Louisiana.

Now it mentions 30K a year. Are you all on salary or hourly?

Our Department puts up the money until state pay kicks in to give incentive for people to come work we have a 1 year turn over rate and too few cops on the road unless your mentally retarded here you wont fail post they make the tests and courses easier minus the physical stuff but thats not really a test its a lesson to be learned. We are hourly until you make captain then you dont get overtime not positive but thats what I was told. Of course I think we should get paid more for the crap we deal with but we just got a 10k raise this year from what pay used to be I started at like 20k not much to feed a family on.

Being a Louisiana Game Warden is not bad and neither is the pay or equipment. The academy is long but worth it. You get numerous raises with in the first 2 yrs. on and a raise every year. You get alot of diversity in the job. Any questions just ask me.

He speaks the truth, nice equipment. But I would just hate to get stuck out in the middle of a swamp in a pirogue and need back-up. EBRSO pays about $30,000 to start.

Baton Rouge PD just received a 7.5% raise. The Mayor has committed the same amount the next 2 years in order to catch up to LSP since their new starting pay is $35,609

The 7.5% BRPD received January 1, brings the current starting salary to $31,390.

January 1, 2009, the starting salary will be $33,744 and by January 1 2010, it will be $36,274.

By 01-01-10, after a year, the pay will be $43,583 with state supp included.

There is also a ton of OT available. That, along with all the extra-duty, means you can make as much as you want.

About the same as any city of that size, nothing to write home about. They are having a little turmoil right now as the chief just promoted a guy to Sgt.even though he failed the test. They are a civil service dept. and ya gotta go by the rules.I know the chief quite well and Tom is considered a friend,BUT,he dropped the ball this time.BTW,the guy he promoted AND the one that is raising the ruckus both have about 12-13 years on,so if you are looking to progress through the ranks,ya might think twice.I would STRONGLY suggest St.Tammany S.O. ,they are the highest paid (well paid at that) in the region, and they are about to get another raise.;)
