Okay I am going to sound like a major rookie here...
I just got hired as a Deputy Sheriff Trainee...which means I am hired on with the agency but they send me through the academy. We just got our uniforms for the academy today and we start on Monday the 15th. They have to be pressed with the Military Press. I have looked all over Google and can not find out to effectively do it. I even called my mother since she came from a military family to ask if she knew and she stated to just take it to a cleaners and have them do it. The issue is we only have 4 shirts and I was told we need 2 each day and may go through both of those a day. I cant afford to have a cleaners do my shirts every 2 days so I want to attempt it at home.
Any suggestions on where I can learn this skill or what I should do? Once I start FTO ill put my SO uniforms in a cleaners since ill have more income and more uniforms. Just need something to get through the academy.

are they BDU pants, like military or are they polyester?

the pants are polyester...eek! The BDU's are for the range and with those we just wear our PT tshirts. The uniform shirt is a basic uniform shirt except looks like what a bus driver wears. Don't get to be in the green till I get sworn in. So for now just a bus driver.

I would suggest you try some older shirts first.

we had to do the same thing when I went through the academy, and I had no idea what the hell a military crease was or what Irish Pennants were.
Just use the above website example and fold each individual crease and iron and starch them individually. Make sure it looks good before you start creasing, b/c once you crease it, its impossible to "start over".
Make sure you starch the crap out of them so they will hold. A good crease wont wash out, and youll be able to re-iron and starch with ease.
Heres a "walk through" : http://everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1548143
Hope this helps

Take them to the cleaners the first time, at least. Then you'll see the end result and you'll have a guide line of how to do it on your own. If they starch it heavy enough, you might end up with literal guide lines...

I used that same website to do my uniforms when I went through the NYSDOCS Academy very helpful.

Trust me on this one...unless you have been in the military don't even try it!! Take them to the cleaners and have them put them in. The creases will stay in even after you wash them and you can follow the lines if you decide to do them on your own after that. Hope the academy goes well for you!

if your pants are anything like my pants...just have them dry cleaned and pressed once...they hold the crease pretty much forever after that and you can just bring them back every once in a while to have them touched up...as for shirts...good luck, i just bring my uniform shirts to the dry cleaners to get cleaned...and we wear white shirts so they pretty much go there every day

I dry cleaned all of my stuff in the academy, it was expensive. However, I didn't want to be bothered with ironing, etc. nightly. I wanted to spend my time studying and working out.
If you can spare funds for a few months I'd suggest doing so. If not, do what others said...drop them off every month so that they keep a nice crease.
Good luck in the academy!

Hey just an idea but have any of you ever heard of a seamstress? I had all of my military creases sewn into my shirts, and do my trousers myself. It is an easy cheap permanent solution. All you have to do is starch and iron them daily and the creases stay right where they belong. I recomend finding shirt stays, so your shirt stays tucked in and straight also. I really like mine that have an ankle loop so that I don't have to worry about them snapping off and hitting the goods, cause that stings something fierce. I sew a button in the inside of al of my shirts right where the shirt stay attachs so I don't have to worry about placement or slippage EVER.
If you try this it may take some getting used to, but you'll look like a razors egde. Just go to your local Marine recruiter and take a look-see, these are the same tricks he uses.
Food for thought.

Well good news. Got the uniforms in and they are sewn in creases. But I think I am going to pick up one more uniform shirt so each Friday when I am off I can take them to be pressed. This ironing every day is driving me insane!

Get use to ironing them because if the dry cleaners in your area are like the ones where I live at your in trouble. My dog could do a better job ironing them

Hey bro I went where you're going and don't forget to PRESS THE SLEEVES!!!! Make sure the crease is in the middle of the lapel!!!!!!!!!!! Make sure if you take it to the cleaner they do the crease in the middle of the lapel!!!!! And you're starting in the winter so u won't sweat as much... I wouldn't worry about using two of those bus drivers a day. See you on the road where you get there.
