A Colorado State Patrol trooper was shot in his bulletproof vest during a routine traffic stop Thursday afternoon south of Cortez.
The suspect sped away from the scene on U.S. Highway 160 near Towoac, Colo., and later shot himself when confronted by officers, according to the State Patrol.
The the officer was shot about 2:30 p.m. near the Ute Mountain Casino and was transported to Southwest Memorial Hospital in Cortez.
The officer's injuries were not life threatening, according to Don Moseman. He said the officer's bulletproof vest saved his life.
The suspect was also rushed to the same hospital in undetermined condition.
