LANTANA -- A Lantana Police Department reserve officer died Saturday night while directing traffic outside Holy Spirit Catholic Church. Alfred Garrison, 78, was flown by helicopter to Delray Medical Center and pronounced dead, according to Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Diane Carhart. Garrison formed the Lantana Police Department reserve officer program 35 years ago, she said. He donated more than 1,000 hours of service per year to the program and had mainly been doing traffic control outside the church after Mass, she said. Details were not available late Saturday but his death was related to a crash about 6:30 p.m. in front of the church at 1000 Lantana Road. The road was shut down in both directions for several hours after the crash.
