SOMERSET, Ky. (AP) -- A county sheriff was shot and killed Saturday during a political rally, state police said.

Pulaski County Sheriff Sam Catron was shot about 7:15 p.m. at the rally and fish fry, Trooper Craig Sutton said. A suspect was in custody but no other information was immediately available, Sutton said.

The KSP just arrested the opponent and his campaign manager for conspiracy to commit murder. The sad thing is that this guy was an ex-LEO and worked under sheriff Catron. I hope all three of them get the death penalty.

This is really a sad situation. I had the opportunity to meet Sheriff Catron at a career fair at the College of Law Enforcement here last year. He seemed to be a very outgoing and friendly person, very well respected in his community. I feel extremely sorry for his mother, since now she has to bury a second loved one killed in the line of duty. Her husband (Sheriff Catron's father) was shot and killed many years ago while he was Somerset, KY's police chief.

FOX News is reporting that the opponent, Morris, and now a third man have officially been charged.
