I wasn't really impressed, I am not blaming the officers but it seems like they are really hurting for people and many of the good officers have already jumped ship. I had a soldier who applied there right after he was discharged, he was a good candidate and was being fast tracked. He took the lie detector and was cut from the process, even though the question he allegedly lied on made no sense. The background investigator didn't look into it just took the word of the machine. His name was even wrong on the letter they sent me...

He is now a officer for a better paying department, but had to relocate, why SDPD didn't give him a chance i will never know.

The "Appointing Authority Interview" is this the same as an oral interview? I'm thinking about applying with SDPD. My only problem if hired is the commute from Riverside to San Diego each day.

Don't apply here if you aren't willing to move. The pay doesn't justify the commute from Riverside. Most people living in Temecula left, I couldn't imagine commuting for farther than that.

SDPD doesn't do the interview (commonly referred to as a Lt's Interview) until after you pass backgrounds. The interview is only pass or fail. The poly is do or die here.

the poly sucks.. SDPD was the 1st agency I was DQed from.. they told me to come back in 5 years.... but a lot of people commute from riverside/temecule to san diego.. it's the closest area for "affordable" housing...you'll love the 15 freeway. why not go SDSO?

I'll take the 15fwy over the 91 anyday.

Are SDPD's polygraph practices different from other departments?

I wouldn't think so. It's been a long time since I did mine but it was pretty straight forward. I didn't lie (or have anything to lie about) and thought it was a pretty simple process.

The actual department has some problems like anyplace else. Our biggest issue is pay & benefits WHEN COMPARED TO DEPARTMENTS IN LA & OC. Nobody makes as little as is posted on the informational packets. I honestly don't know where they get those numbers. I think the info packets say that the top pay of an 'Police Officer II' is about $72K....but I myself make $80K before overtime I know a few making $120K+ and several making over $100K. It's not Irvine or Huntington Beach money for sure but I guarantee you'll do more actual police work in 2-3 years at SDPD (in the right divisions) than in a whole career in Irvine or most other OC agencies.

However, until pay & benefits are improved, we won't be able to attract the "best" candidates and we will continue to suffer with staffing issues.
