KATMANDU, Nepal (AP) - In their largest assault since abandoning peace talks last year, suspected rebels attacked a district headquarters and a nearby airport in northwestern Nepal, and at least 48 police are feared dead, police said Sunday.
Rebels struck district headquarters at Magalsen in Achham district, 375 miles northwest of the capital, Katmandu, killing at least 26 policemen, an officer said on condition of anonymity.
Among those killed was Achham's top local administrator, the police officer said.
The rebels then targeted a small airport at Sanphebaga and were reported to have killed 22 policemen, said a police official who also declined to give his name. There were no passengers at the airport at the time.
There was no immediate official confirmation of the death toll.
A gun battle between government forces and the suspected rebels lasted until early Sunday. Police reinforcements rushed to Magalsen were delayed by bad weather and the mountainous terrain.
