I have a question for you. Hopefully you'll be able to answer.

I met a deputy at a career fair awhile back. She stated that I can apply and start the testing process for Riverside SO as long as I had applied for citizenship, but that I would have to have my citizenship before the academy began.

I applied for my citizenship several months ago, and I should hopefully have it by the end of the year or shortly thereafter.

My question is, if I apply and start the testing process, and assuming my B.I. knows that my citizenship is pending, how far along could I go in the application process? Would I be able to go "all the way", and then get an academy start date pending my receipt of citizenship?

I understand the current process is about 3-4 months, and I think starting the process in the fall (early Nov?) sometime would be great, but I want to know what would happen if my citizenship didn't clear by the time I was through the process. Would my application just sit in a holding pattern until I received the citizenship?

Thanks in advance for the clarification.

I think you can go thru the process all the way into the academy. But upon graduating the academy, they won't be able to sworn you in till your citizenship is done. That's what i was told by my LASD BI.
Hope this helps out. GL!!

Thanks!! That would be even better. I don't mind waiting, I just want clarification first before applying so I don't end up having to reapply just for that. I've noticed it varies from agency to agency.

According to the deputy, Riverside's reasoning was that you become an "employee" when you're in the academy and you needed citizenship first, even though technically a recruit is not a sworn position.

You could call the Riverside County Human Resources Dept. and ask them. You'd think someone there would know

SgtCHP, thanks for the info - I am well aware of the qualifications required as I've been on the site many times. As I stated in my original post, I also know that for Riverside (this appears to vary by agency) "time of appointment" is "time starting academy".

My original questions go farther than just asking if one needs to be a citizen at time of appointment. I already know this.

Thanks though, I honestly appreciate the post. :)
