I heard it recently went from 8 weeks to 7 weeks. Also the academy is going from low stress academy to a high stress academy.
There is just about any shift available to work. Depends what division you work out of. Also there is 3 12's (rotating) 4 10's and 5 8's again depending on what division you work out of and the availability and seniority comes into play as well.
Yes there are two man units assigned to just about all patrols.
My LAPD Process
PQE - 7/07 - PASSED
PAT 1 - 7/24 - PASSED
Prelim BI - 7/25 - PASSED
Poly - 7/26 PASSED
Oral - 09/15
BI Meet N Greet - TBD
Med/Psych/PAT2 - TBD
Oral psych - TBD
Cert. & appointment - TBD

You mean months, right? Yes, the academy is currently about 6 months ( i started 3/5/07 and finishing 9/14/07 which is a couple of days past six months. Starting next month, the academy is changing format. Instead of the usual going to class, getting a lecture, than taking a test....the academy is going to become a lot more scenario based learning which will be pretty cool.
Assignments are 3/12 except for middays which is sometimes a 4/10. I havent heard of a 5/8 being used for new recruits in a while.

well EXPECT to use it regularly when you are over in south Park,or chasing those Blk stone Villians,38th street gangsters, primera flats,Harpies, florencia treces, or four trey knuckleheads! Oh boy,and you get to duck ambushes in the "pueblos" ( y'know that nasty neighborhood by the railroad tracks you see denzel washington driving by in "training day"? Yup -one and the same.A lot of history in that Division-Berry White used to gangbang over there and sing for quarters in the Park ! the Slausons - the original "Seed" from which the misery of the Crips gangs would spawn ,came from out of newton div.and the 38th st Gang-infamous for the "sleepy lagoon murders" and featured as participants in the zootsuit riots ,made Newton their home ,then and now !both The Blk Panthers and SLA shot it out with LAPD there-helping create the Mythos of SWAT.
NEWTON div has taken losses also- Rick Lizzarago was shot down in 2004 by the cowardly rollin '20s blood "formerly known" as Kendrick johnson( found hung in his cell "courtesy" of LASD ), Felony squad Officer Walter Kesterson went down in the lines taking on 2 armed robbers in a gun battle on Santa barbara and avalon at what was then a Movie theater in '46(posthumously awarded the medal of valor),and the first BLk LAPD officer to die in the line of duty,Charles P.williams , paid the ultimate sacrifice in 1923 when he went after a gun waving maniac at 8th st and Stanford ave.ONE good thing - you'll be able to run the gauntlet of the 5 fwy to the 10 fwy every morning and nite at EOW, you'll learn fast and quick "police work 101"-and you'll stay in shape as there is literally NOTHING you can eat(or will want to) other than Mc donalds on 12th and central,or over on figueroa near USC,that is "IF" you have time to go code 7! CHP,LA.county Park Police,LAUSDPD,and Gen Services PD will make "guest appearances" in your neck of the woods-ditto Parole and Probation on a routine basis,as well as LASD-century station( they cover the Central Ave strip in what was old' "firestone" area) along with Maywood PD and Vernon PD on the eastside of Newton. In a yr ,when your "training day" is over, come on over to Pacific div,get fat and happy and we'll meet up for code 7 at I Hop in "sleepy " westchester. Good Job,Berlioz !!!!:D

Sounds like Ill have more than enough to keep me busy at least. Most of the class were dissapointed in their selection. It was mainly Wilshire, West LA, Hollywood, foothill, or southwest. Im the lone recruit going to central bureau.

not that I've always "been there done that" but working for the city of L.A. has allowed me to travel Far and wide throughout this city and county-you'd be surprised at the places a lil' ol' airport cop can end up !(Once actually got into a DUI pursuit at 24th and trinity after just dropping off a 601 WIC kid near there ) you are going to have a great time-just keep you eyes open and NEVEr get discouraged,no matter what you see or experience...

Hey DOA that reminds me, gota meet up with you at the Ihop on Manchester if I ever get off overlaps (although people think Im crazy cause I'm hoping the Capt. will get funding to keep it going, Hey I'm the only one with a 4/10 schedule at my station).

would you(anyone, lapd ofcs or other ofcs) say LAPD is still a good place to work? is it difficult to make detective? are the majority of shifts shifts 3/1's at most stations?
Does the expedited testing get you hired faster or does it still take the same amount of time,u just get through things faster? thanks

Contact our latest LAPD team member ,Berlioz- but be advised- there is no set time schedule or dates. You can take the expedited examinations, but backgrounds may take anywhere from 6 mos to 1yr to process you for the academy-all i can suggest is that if you are interested, don't hesistate-apply now - www.lacity.org/per/psb/lapd_expedited.htm

Pretty much all patrol divisions work a 3/12. Most specialized units and detectives work a 4/10.
Making detective is the same as making any other rank. You take a written test and an oral interview. You have just as much chance as the next guy, depending on your qualifications of course.
Yes, the expedited testing is faster. You can take all the tests within a very short time where as the "regular" testing would take you up to a year. DOA is correct, depending on how extensive your background is, that would take the longest.
I've been here for 19 years and I believe it's still a great place to work.

thanks DOA and LA Copper. im 20 right now and ill be 20 1/2 in nov, so im just waiting. i have a crystal clean bkgrnd. 1 ticket(2yrs ago) with no points on the record,im a ca native, graduated damien hs, but attend asu for college, i speak spanish, and both of my parents were on "the other side" (LASD). i worked as a police aide for phx pd and had a good termination with then(i resigned). im hoping to become a DPS officer here in AZ but LAPD has always been a "dream agency" because although a hell hole its still a world class city with culture, and great scenery.
thanks for your input.

well i wouldn't exactly call L.A. a "hellhole"( maybe more like the "highwater" in terms of hell and high water-NYC actually is a hellhole,Detroit the remaining ashes, and Oakland "purgatory")it all depends on what you want- if you want a more lasid back family lifestyle- you'll find it more in AZ-plenty of good cities like Scotts Valley,Prescott, south Tucson ,to work for and the pay is good for the area-avg is $45K to $66K/yr.there are parts of Tucson and Phoenix that can give the south end in L.A. a run for its proverbial $$$ in terms of crime and violence.come to L.A. becuase you want to be near the beach ( once in a while ) and becuase its a tad bit cooler than AZ

Excuse me for calling LA a "hellhole"...I was born and raised in LA County and i love LA and cosider it home. its a world class city, but obviously has lots of problems. obviously phx(maryvale and south side) could probably give LA a run for the $$$, and most of tucson IS a hellhole lol.
I like living in Scottsdale now, its a great city, very clean and not too many problems. but 110+ for 30 something days this summer is getting REALLY old quick...and plus, i consider LAPD(and Sheriff) to be the finest LE organization and most famed in the world. LAPD always gets the knock, but i would be VERY proud to be part of that organization. right now, its probably AZ for me, but LA and Miami area are close in at #2
