I'm an Arabic speaker and I was wondering what agencies in Southern California would benefit the most from someone who spoke Arabic. I know Beverly Hills has a very large Iranian community while Glendale has a large Armenian community, but don't know of any cities/municipalities that have large numbers of Arabic speakers.

LAPD wants any/all applicants, who speak a second language. The Arabic speaker I worked the same division with, was constantly being called in/sought out for translation or expertise in terrorist matters.

Your profile says you're a recruit. Are you currently working for an LE agency, or self-sponsering through an academy?

Last year when I wrote my profile I was a recruit at Rio Hondo, but was forced to resign because I got the flu during the first week. I recently got active on this forum again and haven't updated my profile. I am actually going to re-enter Rio Hondo in October, putting myself through.

If you're still interested in RBPD, they have an officer assigned to the FBI Terrorism Task Force. I'm not saying you'll get hired and get assigned there, but after a short time, I'm willing to wager that a knowledge of Arabic will get you places.

Long Beach has a Terrorism Division. My buddy who is a Reserve and speaks Arabic is constantly in there translating.

Thanks for the info. I already submitted my application and I'm scheduled to take the written exam in October.

Long Beach is taking apps until Oct 31. After 4-5 years you may get the chance to work in that detail. They may use your language skills prior if needed. I think there are 3-4 guys on the department that speak arabic right now.

The Irvine area of Orange County has a significant Arabic population.

Don't they require a degree or 60 college credits? Not sure how many credits I have but its not 60.

OCSD or LASD would love to have someone with your skill. You would get a lot of exposure and overtime being 'farmed' out to agencies and taskforces within and outside of the County. I would recommend you seriously consider going the County route, you would be initially loaned on an occasional basis to these joint county-Federal task forces and the like, then used more and more often as your expertise and assistance is recognized as high-quality.

It is a huge advantage, good luck with it.

Ever think about going federal? FBI, USPIS, ICE? They'd love to have you on board with your language skill.

FBI requires specific degrees (JD, Accounting) and/or a few years job experience, whereas other federal 1811 positions generally require an accredited 4-year degree.

Check it out!

I have no idea as to their requirements. I was just responding to your inquiry regarding who might benefit best from an Arabic speaker. Sorry.

Thank you for the info. I'll check into it. I've already applied for the LA County Police and to Redondo Beach. I'll see how the process goes with them. In the meantime, once I'm back in full swing at Rio Hondo I will inquire with their officer that teaches classes there about Irvine's requirements. Thanks again!

If you speak Arabic or Farsi (SP?), FBI doesn't care what kind of degree or experience you have.

We in Garden Grove would look favorably on that as well. We have the largest mosque in the area and have a very large muslim population. Only problem is that most Arabic speakers in the US also speak perfect english so it does not come up that often. Knowledge of their customs would be more usefull. As for looking for an agency that has an officer with the JTTF (Joint Terrorism Task Force), every agency has an officer assigned to that. Thats why its called a Joint Task force. Getting that gig though is so hard I would not even mention that as a goal when applying somewhere, it would make you sound cocky and clueless as to how hard it is to get on it. It would be like saying,

"I know it will take awhile, at least 6 months or more, but I really want to be Chief."

Do you like lutefisk? :)

I recommend that you take some English courses at your local community or city college until your in the process of applying for citizenship. That's one way of improving your language skills. Just a suggestion. Good luck!

As EDJ was saying, LASD has a big Terrorism Unit. They would take you in a heartbeat. They are always looking for Deps that speak second languages (especially Arabic). AS he was saying, you would probably be used on taskforces alot.
