They are a good department from my research and experience (I was offered a conditional offer, but went with another local department). Their pay is top notch ($5486/mo DURING THE ACADEMY) and they just landed a deal that will increase their pay by 24% in the next 4 years. So by the end of the first year your base salary will be approx. $6000 (not including overtime). They send their recruits to LASD academies, their background investigators are nice people (from first hand experience my guy was great).

I hope that helps.

I've heard Glendale PD is EXTREMELY picky.

Heard the same about Burbank and Beverly Hills PDs...

A LT of ours kid went there and I talked about it to him at length. Its a very good department. They have the latest equipement and a very good rep. they have a lot of officers so there is plent of promotional opportunity. I have not seen him since he got hired but his dad says he loves it.

I grew up in the Glendale/Eagle Rock area, so naturally, GPD was one of the very first PD's I tested with. I went in totally unprepared, and needless to say, I failed the oral interview....miserably :( They were, and still are very selective about the officers/recruits they hire. Education, and a second language (preferably Armenian ) would be ideal

Good pay, good department and if you are Armenian you got it made. Its the Armenian capitol of the world.

I'm gonna have to go with Armenia for that one. :)

Getting back to my post about Glendale PD being picky, I met an LA County Police Officer a few years ago who spoke Armenian and was from Glendale. Prior to working County OPS, that officer applied at Glendale but was turned down. So apparently, speaking Armenian and being from the community won't make one a shoe-in.

Two phrases you'll need to know:

Getz-zeer = Stop!

Tzer-kerrid ver-arr = Put your hands up!

BTW, 80's porn star Christy Canyon is half-Armenian...and all hot!

they've taken (3) of our LAX guys in the last 3 yrs-not that our guys are "turd burgers",but as long as you are reasonably intelligent and have a clean backgrounds, glendale will hire you :p. Even with our upcoming "funky" 3 yrs late 10.5%,Glendale PD will still be getting PAID better than us or LAPD !!! our pay rate will soon be $5,000 /mo to $7,200/mo-still "low" compared to GPD(one of the "best" paid in So.Calif) They have some activity and local community support-nothing wrong with that!

Today I attended Rio Hondo's pre-service orientation for class #185 that starts in late October. Two of Glendale's background officers were there looking for pre-service recruits to apply.

well, did you jump on their offer??????!!!!

good luck- even though it will be the 2nd day,you may want to ask the tac staff anyway- they try and accomodate reasonable requests as Rio hondos rep is made not only on producing dept sponsored recruits but making sure that the pre service recruits get access to opportunities for employment. As for your friend?? I hope he has the "real' desire to be an officer-other than that typical " I have a degree and it pays more" attitude- I've seen alot of guys and ,lately, women FAIL because they are only in it to increase their paychecks !!I see it alot where I'm at,as well as other "district" PDS( folks have that nasty habit of thinking that it isn't "Real police" work, then are shocked and in tears when they can't pass probation and get their walking papers)............

Well, he actually comes from a family with a long history of connections with law enforcement. He has an uncle who worked for LAPD for over thirty years and now works for Irvine PD. He has an aunt who also works for Irvine PD. He also has two cousins who work for Newport Beach, one as a detective and the other as a CSO. So he's not unfamiliar with what a law enforcement career entails.

As far as myself, I'll submit my application and go from there. Thanks for the advice!

Good luck with your application! As far as your friend, I've seen a lot of people go into law enforcement simply because they have a family background in it, which in my opinion is a wrong reason to do it. This is the kind of work which you need to have a deep down desire to do, you need to have known this is what you want to do for a looong time.

One of my partners in Hollywood was Armenian, raised in Baghdad of all places! We were cruising one night and saw some Armenian woman who was waaaaay overdressed for wherever she was and whatever she was doing. I said, "Ooops, looks like she missed the turnoff for the 'Miss Yerevan' competition!" Armen doesn't miss a beat, cocks his mustache to one side and replies, "No way, she's not hairy enough!" I had to stop the car I was convulsing with laughter.
