There were no polys when I became an officer. I believe that they became a popular tool in the 80s when some questionable candidates made it necessary to test their verasity and honesty. They have just been used and relied upon since then. Funny thing is they do not have the capability of forecasting the future performance of an individual!!!

Correct me if I am wrong but don't some state bar the use of the polygraph test.

You are correct. They cannot be used in the hiring process here in Minnesota.

Heavy petting is perfectly fine....I know LAPD started giving every candidate a poly shortly after the 'Rampart Scandal'. Prior to that,,the poly was only used on candidates they felt may have an honesty isuue. Mainly for financial reasons..polygraphs cost money and L.A. (City) wasn't willing to pay for a poly examination for every single applicant. Rampart changed that. LASO, on the other hand, gave every applicant a polygraph..but I'm not sure when they started giving them. I don't think they did in the 70's.

My cousin the cop calls the polygraph "a walk down memory lane with a stranger."

You know, I find it funny that I was the ONLY one in my academy class that never took a poly. Heck, every deputy I talk to that went to the academy in my era (1990) took one. I've never taken one in my life...My department and LAPD seem to stand by them.

I really dont think i have done anything too bad in my past, some embarrassing stuff but I dont think anything that would bar me from LE work.

I will tell you I have seen the CVSA in action, and to be perfectly honest we could tell **** from that thing. Sometimes it would say the guy was lying to things that were impossible. I was not very impressed.

The only good thing about it was tricking dumb people into confessions. For that purpose it works very well.

I just hope police departments do not put too much faith in their results.

she was probably just messing with you to see if you would change your story. They always like to test.

Well, after that she asked me what I was thinking about when I heard the question and I said that did not think about anything at that time. She put it on a paper and I had to sign it. It would be really messed up if I wouldn't get in for some machine reading my heart beat wrong.

Once you get a letter saying you are officially removed from the hiring process for failing the poly, write a rebuttal letter. State in it the obvious, that you did not lie, have learned from the mistakes you made as a kid AND that you would be happy to take another poly to prove your honesty.

In can only help and will show your commitment.
