Officer Robins was shot and killed with his own weapon when he and his girlfriend were assaulted at about 0400 hours while he was off duty. The two were checking out of a hotel when his girlfriend was attacked by two men in the manager's office. Officer Robins, who was waiting in his car, exited the vehicle and identified himself as an officer.
The two men then began to attack him and knocked him to the ground. He drew his weapon and shot one of the suspects, but the two continued to attack him. His gun was wrestled away and one of the men shot him twice with it. The wounded suspect was arrested after checking himself in to a local hospital.
Officer Robins had been with the agency for 27 years and was assigned to the Cook County Jail. He was survived by his mother, three sons, and daughter.
