Off-duty sheriff's police officer fatally shot

Police were searching for a gunman in connection with the fatal shooting of an off-duty Cook County Sheriff's police officer early today as he stood on a South Side street, according to police.
Chicago Police Department spokeswoman Laura Kubiak said that Dwayne Baker, 33, of the 10800 block of South Beverly Avenue was standing in front of 54 E. 47th Street around 12:30 a.m. when a man fired shots from across the street, striking him in the chest, stomach and neck.
The shooter fled down 47th Street in a gold or tan sport-utility vehicle and is being sought by police, according to Kubiak.
Kubiak said a 20-year-old woman, whose identity had not been released, was also injured -- struck in the left leg by a stray bullet. She was listed in stable condition at Provident Hospital.
