WARREN, Mich. -- A detective and a drug suspect were fatally wounded during a struggle while the officer was booking him at police headquarters.

Officers said investigators were reviewing a videotape of the lockup area in an effort to figure out the sequence of events that led to the shooting Wednesday evening.

Detective Christopher Wouters had arrested a suspect on drug charges, Warren police Chief James Vohs said. Both were wounded around 6:30 p.m. after the man "produced a gun and there was a struggle," he said.

Authorities did not immediately say whether the gun belonged to the detective or the suspect.

Wouters, 42, died an hour later at St. John Macomb Hospital. The suspect died later the same night, hospital spokeswoman Rebecca O'Grady said Thursday. His name wasn't released.

Vohs described Wouters, a 19-year veteran, as a good officer who was married and had two young daughters. It was the first time since 1969 that an officer has been killed in the line of duty in Warren, a large blue-collar Detroit suburb.

I live in the town where this happened and have some additional news.

The suspect had been arrested earlier and searched by that arresting officer. The officer, however, did not search the front crotch area of the suspects pants.

The suspect was then turned over to Det. Wouters. While being booked in lockup, the suspect pulled a gun from the front of his pants and shot Det. Wouters in the neck. The suspect then shot and killed himself.

Wouters had a wife and three young children. Please remember them, and Det. Wouters soul in your prayers. May he rest in peace in God's loving hand.

Some new information has surfaced. It appears as if the scumbag who shot and killed Det. Wouters did not commit suicide after all.

The other officer in the room got scumbag in a bearhug from behind. Scumbag was trying to shoot over his shoulder and behind him at this other officer. The officer turned the gun just in time and scumbag shot himself instead.

Thank God, because had he killed those two officers they probably would have been the first of many to die.
