I've mentioned before that I sometimes receive contacts from people who have lost an Officer they knew and loved... and that many times, it turns out to be years, and even decades... since the last time they were able to talk with someone about the friend they still miss today.

Here's part of an email I opened from one of our members this morning...

About 10 years ago, before the police.com BBS existed, one of my friends, who was also one of my martial art teachers, was killed by a single gunshot wound to the heart. He was a Chicago police officer, number 16556, off duty at the time. He had gone to question someone who had been seen tampering with a car. From what I heard, the person was stationary on a bicycle, turned away, then turned back and fired. Johnny died en route to the hospital. He was a great teacher, a great police officer, and a great friend. He is sorely missed.

Johnny Martin was only 31 years old. http://www.officer.com/ubb/frown.gif

Monty... I'm sorry you lost your friend. I wish it never happened and that you could be spending time with him today. For you to have kept him in your heart all of these years shows how much he meant to you. You were blessed to have him as your friend... and his memory is blessed to be so warmly remembered by you.

Thank you for trusting in me enough to contact me about Johnny. I have looked through the ODMP and I did find a memorial post in Johnny's honor. The site itself did not exist at the time Johnny died... so they must have researched back with different departments to gather the information on your friend... and others. No one who knew Johnny probably even knows the memorial post is there... as no reflections have been made for him. Perhaps you would like to use this link I'm leaving for you to say a little something about the friend who's memory you keep with you.

God bless you, Monty. You are a good soul.

Rebecca:

Thanks, and God bless you, too; I think you're a saint.

Monty,

I am sincerely sorry for your loss, and know from experience the pain that follows the violent death of a friend. You will both be remembered in my prayers. Eternal rest grant unto Johnny Martin and let perpetual light shine upon him. May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Connie
