I know that there are a few people in the academy right now, and also some more that went through it, but I had a few questions as I'm headed to the academy in October.
1. What exactly do I need to buy? I know that they will tell me when the academy gets closer, but I'm really curious to the costs associated with starting the academy, such as uniforms, PT gear, books, gun, ect.
2. Why is there a pay range for the academy? Don't want to sound like I'm all in it for the money, but curious as to the salary range. Do you get an increase in pay as you go through, or do certain people start higher because of college degrees?
Thanks.

#1 Like you said they will tell you but I would imagine you could ask someone at RSO if you have already been hired. Or call the loacl uniform shop and ask them for an approximate cost, they would know.

You will be paid trainee salary until you graduate.

Good luck in the academy lakersfan. How long was the overall process and how many agencies did you previously apply for?

With #1 I know I will be told, just wondering as I like to be prepared. I am not currently hired as of yet, as the only thing left is the home visit and letter to references. I have passed all the other parts so far. Like I said I just would like to know a bit more in advance so I can be prepared
With # 2, that link is an old link, as the salary has been increased. If you check the Riverside County HR dept, there is a range (~$3900-$4800)and multiple steps listed. I am just curious as to if everyone starts at the bottom and then gets raises throughout the academy, or if they start certain people higher up depending on their college education. FWIW, LASD pays more for AA/AS and BA/BS degrees, even in the academy.
DON951, thanks! Not 100% there yet, but I am fairly confident that I will get the formal job offer here soon. The whole process was pretty quick, although I did delay it a bit, as they wanted to get me into the July academy, but due to current employment obligations I couldn't start that early so they delayed the process a bit to accommodate. I would say that after meeting with my BI, the process took about 2 months to do all the testing, and the final background check is taking about another month, so 3 months or so total. Depending on when they are trying to get you into the academy, it could be as fast as 1-2 months.

Yea, joinrsd.org has something different. The HR dept and the Riverside Sheriff Association have the most current salary schedules, but they don't explain a whole lot. I really just want to know if those with college degrees make more or if everyone is the same.

... FWIW, LASD pays more for AA/AS and BA/BS degrees, even in the academy.
Most agencies that offer more pay for degrees do so via percentage. For example, an AA is worth 5% more of base pay.
However, at LASD, you are simply started on the next higher step. If you are hired at Step One (as is everyone without a degree), then you get the base Deputy Sheriff Trainee pay for the whole academy. If you have a BS degree, you are hired at Step Two.
Your peers will eventually catch up to you, but you will have "topped out" much sooner and earned more all the way along the line until the years go by and your peers pay catches up to you.

You will recieve the lowest amount shown while in the academy. The different steps usually apply to laterals and are used as an incentive to attract members from other departments.
As far as cost, if I remember right, it wasn't too bad. Your uniforms are provided, as is all your leather gear (sam browne, cuff case etc.)
You will need to buy a pair of boots ($100-200), some good running shoes($50-100), a couple pair of compression shorts ($20 ea.), your firearm, holster and magazine pouch. You dont need the firearm until week 12 or so, but I would try to have $500-1000 set aside so you have it when you need it. You will get a list of authorized weapons during the 1st 2 weeks of the academy.

Thanks for the info! So laterals go through the academy too? I figured that laterals start right away as deputy, and don't need to go through the academy. So RSD does not give anything extra, or start you off any higher if you have a degree?
Thanks on the costs too, sounds not too bad. I have the list of approved firearms already, and have been looking at all of them.

Only laterals from other states go through the academy. The other steps could also apply to, lets say, a top step Correctional Deputy trying to go sworn. A top step CD makes more than the average recruit, and maybe they will try to make up the difference.
Hey SoCAlSheriff, How much time before you started your FTO. you had to work in jail right?

I just started the process with them. I haven't heard anything about a home visit. What's that all about?

Your BI might notify you that he or she will be coming to visit you at your home.

This is done at the end of the process. Your BI comes to your home to talk with wife/girlfriend/roommates/neighbors to find out a bit more about you. Just part of the overall background check.

Well took the written for S.D.S.D. it was a bit easier then Riverside. They had no essay and seemed like half the questions were the same as Riverside :D .
The hiring process sounds a bit more logical to me. After you receive your test results your scheduled for a "back ground investigation orientation" you also meet with a B. I. spill your guts and they let you know if you should continue on with the process.
