Any LAPD officers on the air? I'm a NJ LEO (FTO) trying to get a copy of the LAPD Field Officers Training Manual. I imagine the thing must look like a Webster's Dictionary, but I was interested in reading it. I'm a new FTO, and I wanted to follow the LAPD format in teaching my new recruit. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

You need to enable Private Messaging in the "User CP" (blue bar at top of screen) in order for me to send you PM re: your request.

If El Diablo Joe can get you what you need then great.. If not, I'll PM you with a phone number for our Training Division so that you can call them directly and they should be able to take care of you.
Retired,
That particular manual that you see on-line is different from the FTO Manual.

Wow, all those radio codes seem a bit complicated. Over here, we have the "10" codes (10-1 is "Officer needs urgent assistance", 10-3 is "Alarm activation", 10-8 is "Check on Police National Computer") and to be honest only about 5 or 6 get used with any regularity. Do you really have to memorise the code for "balloon down" for example?

Yeah, I've got a digital copy of THE LAPD FTO Manual, but I am waiting for LAmary6&7 (wasn't that Ponch and Jon's radio call signs??) to PM me. I want him to fax me a copy of his credentials before I forward this document. I mean, what police-misconduct lawyer wouldn't L O V E to get their hands on a copy of this? They could then research every line to sue officers for negligence, poor training, and dereliction of duty.

Anyone else find it odd that a NJ FTO would want to train his rookie in any way other then how HIS agency train's rookies?

Perhaps they don't have any kind of FTO program/manual? Not everyone's been under the gun, like LAPD. Paying out all kinds of settlement money to people who should have never been selected, but somehow got through. When some FTO points it out and they do the right thing and can the kid, the kid complains/sues. I terminated (maybe) four, in my time as an FTO.
Our FTO program/manual was copied from other departments who had the cutting-edge going for them.

this is NOTHING new- everyone grabs everyone elses FTO manuals- either to update or to see what the other "locals" are doing. I think the NJ copper requesting should ask his Dept FIRSt before trying to apply the LAPD fTO manual,or at least look at other area depts,as there my be differences in continuity of training, legal procedures, etc.

Why pick the LAPD FTO manual? Is your dept gonna get a consent decree? Most agencies in California model their FTO stuff off San Jose PD. I guess someone from POST wet his pants and thought San Jose was bitchen or something.

That would probably be the former Chief of San Jose, the New York native, ultra-ivory-tower residing, 'liberal as Cindy Sheehan' Joe McNamara.

Guys-
I just sent ElDiablo a message. Literally minutes after posting this thread in August, I got suspended for 30 days from officer.com for a language violation. I didn't realize the site was so strict (lesson learned)! I am no squirrel here, just a full-time LEO. I wanted to look at LAPD's manual for tactics/ officer safety tips, but I realize that most of the manual is probably checklist and grading.
To give some background on why I was looking at LAPD, I did a ride-along in Huntington Beach in 2000. I was extremely impressed with the agency and its officers. I have always been a big fan of the training and tactics taught/ utilized on the West Coast, so I wanted to impart that knowledge onto my recruit. For those of you who are unaware, NJ is about dead last in proactive policing. Although my agency's FTO program is decent paperwork-wise, I wanted to look to West Coast for more proactive information.
In any case, I appreciate all of your help. I have had my recruit for 5 weeks now, and we are doing well. Thanks again.

go to the LAPD website listed here on O.com- they have contact #s,and you will get the most help from training Div( they can provie you with very sharp training videos, mems, and material) but this will probably require an official letterhead before they do anything.LAPD is good but ,like you said ,you rode with HBPD and saw bascially "West coast " tactics-which almost 99% of the agency mimic here in Calif.it might be better to simply contact the CA. POST -www.post.ca.gov for training and assistance ideas.Remember, alot of agencies nationwide think what we do in Calif. isn't"macho" or realistic,or even necessary ( a ride along from Ga. at my dept thought we were too timid on dealing with a felony vehicle stop recently-I guess he thinks its okay to walk up on a car full of rollin' 60s Crips )........
