Anyone out there have insight on San Marino PD?
They're testing in September and the PD's website says their selection process is only 8 weeks long - that's unheard of! I did a ride-along there a few years back and I remember it was very quiet...

Chan Marino is one of the, if not THE, most upscale city in the San Gabriel Valley. It borders South Pasadena on the west. The Ritz-Carlton is on the north-west border area. It is a very small, and pretty elite little city. It is probably more upscale than Arcadia, and rivals the toniest areas of Pasadena.
I have no insight on the PD there, sorry.

LOL! Thought that might happen. It's a tiny city - 4 miles square. Famous for the Huntington Library and having not one apartment building within city limits. It's between Alhambra, South Pasadena, Pasadena and Arcadia. :)
Apparently they use OCSD to train recruits. Nice.

Wow, for being in such a ritzy neighborhood they sure do pay their officers a low wage!
Yeah, I think that's part of the law of inverse incomes. The wealthier the hood, the less they pay. Check with our fair counterparts in the following cities:
Santa Barbara, CA.......5454-6630/month
Beverly Hills, CA..........5800-6828/month
Laguna Beach, CA.......4393-6179/month
Jupiter Island, FL........3250-5416/month
Greenwich, CT............2888-3989/month
NOW, compare that to these cities...
Santa Ana, CA...........5773-9365/month
Garden Grove, CA.......xxxx-6843/month
Maywood, CA.............4386-5331/month

I went to radar school with a couple guys from San Marino PD. From what they said, the biggest crime there is cutting your own grass. Apparently, if you're no Mr Miagi, you have to hire a landscaper. They also have a policy to book all misdemeanors. Yes even unlicensed drivers get booked there.

Thanks, Bully. This is good info. Looks like they stay busy booking everything... And I was worried about it being too slow there :D
Aside from cutting your own grass, I hear other major crime is found on Huntington Drive: lots of banks to rob and plenty of DUI movers coming from bars in Pasadena, Alhambra, and Arcadia.

It is a good dept and treats it's officers well. They do book on all misdemeanors, including vehicle code. They issue take home tasers (great for parties) and ar-15's to all patrol officers. If you are coming from an aggressive city, it would be a hard adjustment. Overall it's a good dept. I don't work for them, but have a friend who does.

This is excellent information, thank you!!! I'm coming in as a recruit. It's great to hear that their people are taken care of. Seems like a great time to join SMPD. They're recruiting for a new Chief and have plenty of openings for LEOs -- last I heard they were short 4 officers. Thanks again, FPD GUY. :)

I can see why they'd all need AR's :(

Yeah, it's a real dangerous town:) . They do get the occasional gangsters rolling through their 4 square miles from Pasadena though. You don't need to buy the AR-15, it's issued.

For you wonks out there:
San Marino (1913)
This area was once home to James de Barth Shorb, son-in-law and business manager of Benjamin D. Wilson, who founded Alhambra. Shorb named his rancho San Marino after his grandfather's plantation in Maryland, which itself was named for the Republic of San Marino, a tiny state surrounded by Italy. Shorb's estate was purchased by Henry E. Huntington in 1903 and is now the Huntington Library, Art Collections and Botanical Gardens.

okay, late on the subject- nice, quiet city full of uber "riche" folks, mostly asian and conservative-akin to Bradbury, only I think San Marino has a few more bucks( th SGV version of Bel Air)- you're slumming when you leave there and hang out in south Pasadena!I believe they still rotate job positions to mix things up- officer for a few yrs, detective, then traffic, etc.Had a classmate there in my DAR class-she said it was serious "turn the lights out and lock the doors" type of policing- expect to stop alot of local kids driving mommy and daddies SLKs and 750s;expect to stop the errant pasadena wanna be blood or cholo who strays into the town.and i agree w/EDJ- its funny that many "richy -rich" towns pay less than the "GHEEE-to" towns near them-simple and plain-those towns are "cheap",/but hey,if you can 60-75 k/yrwhy complain-go for it!

Thx DOA. We've spoken about SMPD thru PMs and this extra bit of info is great.
Anybody know if San Marino PD has to deal with that "I'm better and smarter than you because I'm wealthier than you" attitude you find in well-to-do cities?

Ohhhh, I would think that would be a given. I think of it as the "Irvine" attitude, or the "Newport" attitude.

Gotcha! Thanks for the heads up. I'm working on apps with a few other SGV PDs and possibly a couple federal 1811s. Main concern is being able to go to interviews, etc., for multiple agencies and not have that effect my work day. But then again, I don't subscribe to the "Put all your eggs in one basket" philosophy so perhaps I should expedite those other apps regardless... :D
