WHITTIER, Calif. (APBnews.com) -- A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy is fighting for his life after he was shot in the head today during an early morning traffic stop.

The deputy, whose name has not been released, was patrolling the unincorporated area of Whittier with his partner, said sheriff's spokeswoman Belinda Johnson.

At about 3:20 a.m., the deputies pulled over a car at Gunn Avenue and Mulberry Drive to cite the driver for a traffic violation.

Someone in the vehicle fired on the officers and one was shot in the head. He was underwent surgery at a local hospital this morning and was reported in critical condition today.

The other deputy was not injured, Johnson said.

Deputies cordoned off several blocks in the area and are searching for the suspect or suspects, Johnson said. Two elementary schools were closed because of the manhunt.

No information about the suspects was available.

This is wonderful news. I always seem to hear the worst news... so what a difference this can make when it comes to hope. I know he surely has a long road to a full recovery... but he can do it. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif

I'll keep praying for him. http://www.officer.com/ubb/smile.gif
