Cincinnati Police Officer Kevin Crayon was killed in the line of duty early this morning.

Around 12:40 a.m., Officer Kevin Crayon, 40, noticed a driver, Courtney Mathis, 12, backing out of UDF parking lot.

Officer Crayon approached the boy and asked to see his drivers' license, but the boy refused.

Mathis proceeded to back up the car. Officer Crayon noticed he was in danger of hitting young children. The officer tried to stop the car by reaching in the vehicle to allegedly pull the keys from the car.

The officer somehow became hooked to the car and was dragged for approximately 800 feet.

Witnesses said they saw Crayon reach for his service pistol while being dragged from the car. He fired one shot which hit Mathis in the chest.

Then the officer was thrown from the car where it is believed he died instantly.

The boy drove to his parents' apartment. Then they called for help.

Mathis was taken to Children's Hospital, where he died from gunshot wounds around 5 a.m.

Mathis' parents said they were not aware that he had taken the car. It is not known whether they will be charged in this incident.

Police are looking for two prominent witnesses to this incident.

At a press conference, Chief Tom Streicher said that Mathis' car struck another car stopped at a red light. The driver of that car left the scene.

Chief Streicher also said that another driver either rolled into Crayon or drove near him after he was thrown from the car. This driver also left the scene.

Police ask that if anyone knows these two witnesses, to please call the Cincinnati police.

Officer Crayon did serve on the police force since 1996. He has three children: 16, 18 and 19-years-old.

He was a Forest Park graduate and served in the U.S. Army.

Please pray for the loved ones of this courageous officer so that they may find peace.

Oh... I'm so sorry, Rachel. The loss of a good cop and a young boy... all for the sake of a joy ride. I hope these other witnesses will come forward. I'll say my prayers for the families... but also for you and the rest of the LE family in Cincinnati.

The feelings of shock and numbness that I felt have now washed away to anger. The news media is now reporting mainly on how the family of this kid is going to sue the Cincinnati Police department. Can you believe this sh*t! The cops body isn't even cold and already this family has procured a lawyer.

A Guardian saw his duty and did it. That the instigator will be protected from the results of his murdering actions shows the state of disgrace our society is sinking to. A parent, irreguardless of the relationship, has a duty to perform, an example to set, that justice is more important than blood. Painful, without a doubt. Necessary, absolutely.

To come back and throw mud on the Warrior for trying to protect those around that son is unthinkable. He was trying to protect that son from self inflicted injuries too.

And now to take the light off of the justifible charges against their son and attempt to show that hero is to be at some type of fault is sad. Sad because it shows the defective mind that premates that family unit.

The bottom line in all of this is that THE THIN BLUE LINE has lost another Warrior in our efforts to protect those that turn against us.

And St.Michael escorts another Warrior home.

Rest in Peace Brother,
The streets you will now patrol are streets of purest gold.
Your transfer has been approved.
Rest in Peace.

I don't know if you'll attend the funeral Raychel, or if this will be your first police funeral. Let me assure you that it is one of the most emotional experiences you'll ever have.

I agree with you completly Nightshift. I have been around death all of my life as my father was an undertaker & have been to many funerals, but the funeral of an officer is like no other you will ever attend. People who never even knew the officer will break down right along side of his fellow officers.

God Bless his family with the strength to carry on.
