What is the word on Cypress PD, what comes to mine when you think of Cypress PD. Are they well respected among OC agencies? I know they pay well starting out but there top step is not all that great.....just curious because I'm considering them.

Any info on this agency is good info. Thanks guys

There's a guy on here who is currently in week 2 of 24 for the OC academy, but for Cypress PD. You might try PM-ing him. See the thread titled "Week 2 of 24."

In talking with a few other coppers in the OC area that surround Cypress, they say CPD is a kind of "isolated" department. They keep to themselves a LOT. So I guess that's why they are sort of unheard of in a way. Not many peopleon the outside know much about them.

Cypress, Los Alamitos, and Seal Beach are almost the same thing. They share the same dispatch center, train together frequently, and back each other frequently.

Other then that you really never hear anything about them or coming out of there. If I was going to be a OC cop it would be at HB, Newport, Anaheim, or Orange..in that order.

i hear you, i wouldnt mine anaheim but i hear they are extremly picky with who they hire. Plus you still get some action with them. HB has to be just as boring as the city of Cypress so i dont see a difference between those two or newport

HB has their fair share of gangs, bar fights and domestics. If you think you would be bored there, you are in for a rude awakening.

I think HB is more picky then Anaheim. Anaheim is good for OT. You can work it everyday from what I've been told.

HB has much more to do then Cypress. More area to cover. Helicopters, a large Motors detail, beach detail, downtown beat, etc. Cypress doesn't have crap. HB also seems to have alot of 211 at banks and other odds and ends to get into.

RE: this supposed rude awakening.... This guy is gonna transfer from Long Beach to an OC PD. Trying to stay awake will be the problem.

He wanted something bigger that had some movement, plus he got a pay raise

No offense, but I have a "bone" to pick with those type of guys- it doesn't take a rocket scientists degree to KNOW that a small dept means "small" dept career! Cypress PD??? did he think he was going to fight Nazi lowriders, chase Mexican mafia street thugs,or roll code 3 to 187 call after 187 call?I believe you should ALWAYS pick the job for the lifestyle you want.while every copper here has bagged his /her share of felons and knuckleheads, you need to find and work at the place that will give you want you want -not for 1-5 yrs,or even 5-10,but potentially for the whole "stretch".just have to "pick wisely" in terms of the job,not for the first thing popping....

small town- a few square miles,50K population- high percapita household income ($78K) ( L.A.s in about $48K) starting pay is $54K( recruits)-$60K to $ 77K/yr-not bad for a small town with a decent economic base.some folks are happy as small town cops...

thanks guys, it sounds like cypress pd is the lost city around the oc. I'm pretty sure they get the top of the line equipment and they have that new computerized indoor shooting range at the station (pretty nice). has any one shot at one of those type?

Hey LB Blue, as an L.A. County lateral into OC, I know some of the things you're facing. I had a dozen LB recruits w/ me in the academy back when yours stopped training (and when we took over 2/5 of your city).

You probably won't be happy, seeing where you're coming from, with anything less than Santa Ana, Anaheim, HB, or OCSD. The small-town politics and jurisdictional limitations are going to drive you up a wall and fast. There's nothing more exciting than spending the next several decades of your career pushing a hoop around the same 10 square miles. Over and over and over again.

PS-- I am pretty sure from what I've heard that I would never be happy in the United States of Orange (city of), so you might look at that one long and hard to determine if it should be on your short list.

Hope this helps,

EDJ

At a recent Cypress City Council meeting, they introduced their newest officer. Turned out the guy was formerly the chief of San Marino PD. He had every POST certificate and maybe a masters degree as well. Raises some questions for me there, but read into it what you will.

this was their newest officer? or they hired a new chief? wow...a former chief going back down to an officer?

i think most of the smaller OC cities are unknown and do their own things. i know cypress, los al, westminster, fountain valley are part of the west OC SWAT...

and then Brea/Yorba Linda; Fullerton/CSUF; La Habra; Placentia; La Palma for north OC SWAT...
i think most applicants look at the bigger depts, than these smaller ones

Thats 'cuase most applicants don't think these depts are"real" police !! everybody wants to be part of the BIG names(in L.A. county, its LAPD,LASD,Long Beach) in OC its Santa Ana,Anaheim, OCSD,huntingtonBch PD)-but hey1 if you are applying you can stand in line and be "just a number" or you can apply at a dept that might actually consider you as an important part of the cities' operation-either way,big or small,go to WHERE you can get hired!!!
