View Full Version : Fallen Deputy Sheriff
It is with a saddened heart that I announce the death of Sgt. Dan Jenkins of the Camden County Georgia Sheriff's Office. Sgt. Jenkins, a 7 year vetran of the department was shot & killed early this A.M. while on a traffic stop with an armed robbery suspect. The suspect, who fled after shooting Sgt. Jenkins numerous times and taking his service weapon, was apprehended several hours later in a nearby county. Sgt. Jenkins leaves behind his wife who also works for the department and had just recently graduated from the police academy, 3 children, 2 step-children and several other family members. No funeral arrangements are available at this time.
**Without the aid of the in-car video/audio camera that our agency has in EVERY patrol car, it is possible that this subject would not have been identified**

Rita... you are from Camden County?
Rebecca,
Yes I am from Camden and have known Dan and his wife Jeannie since even before they started working for us. He will be missed greatly and all of Jeannie's family here at work will do everything that it takes in order to help her get through this critical time in her life.
Thanks for your support Glock & Rebecca.

I read this in an article about Sgt. Jenkins on APBNews.com
A sheriff's officer who moved to this southern Georgia community from Illinois because he thought it would be a safer place to raise his children was shot and killed today when he stopped a robbery suspect on Interstate 95, authorities said.

My condolences to his family and friends.

That is good news. Is there a fund or anything be taken for the family?

I got this teletype right after it happened. By the time I got on the computer to post it, it was already there.
I always read this topic, but rarely reply. Sometimes words can't express what you feel. Things change when someone you know is affected by this senseless killing. Rita, please pass along our condolences to the family. From all of us here in your old neck of the woods.
Rest easy, brother, we'll take your watch.

Another tragic, needless, loss. I am sure we will find out soon that this "suspect" has a rap sheet a mile long and should have been in jail instead of stealing and killing. One quick point. Someone said that the in-car camera helped find the suspect. Our department has several of these, but I seem to be the only one that uses it on a regular basis. Maybe, if nothing else, this will convince them to at least turn on the recorder

Rita,
I try to post a heart felt notice for the fallen heros in our society. The Warriors guarding our society deserve all the praise that can be given and is well deserved.
A Guardian from our ranks in THE THIN BLUE LINE is gone. It marks a sad, sad occassion for both their family and us as brothers and sisters. And when the incident hits home, our own back yard, the pain comes hard. The arms that hold each other are family and adopted family.
The rest of us that call Georgia home, I'm sure, send our heartfelt prayers and condolences to all that this personally effects.
Know that if not in person, then certainly in spirit we are standing beside you.
Another family stands without a husband and a Dad for those that looked up to him and she that was half of him. His body is gone, but a part is still there.
The memories that will have to sufice for his wife. The shared half that each of his children have of him. Which with his wife's half made the whole child that are his legacy to mankind.
So take heart, he is gone, but he is here. And will always be here as long as any think of him.
And so, St. Michael escorts yet another Warrior home.
Rest in Peace Brother,
The streets you protect now are street of purest gold.
Your transfer has been approved.
Rest in Peace.

My condolences to Sgt. Jenkins family and his fellow officers.
Sgt. Jenkins has entered into eternal bliss, where life is changed, not taken away.

Sorry that it has taken so long to get back to everyone on this, it was all most of us could do to get through the funeral on Friday.
There were at least 2000 officers and 4 miles of police cars in the funeral procession. GSP, Trauma 1, Life Flight and another agency did a fly-by in the missing man formation at graveside and Dan's badge #, 1111, was retired on the air.
The information on the memorial fund is as follows:
Dan Jenkins Memormial Fund
Acct. #0403221016
$$ etc can be sent to the fund by either sending it straight to the bank:
Southeastern Bank, P.O. Box 39,
Woodbine, Ga. 31569
or to the department:
Camden County Sheriff's Office, P.O. Box 699,
Woodbine, Ga. 31569.
For those of you that have the luxury of having cameras in your cars PLEASE USE THEM!!
I know that it can be a pain in the butt sometimes but other times it will save you butt.
You would not believe how many people complain about the way an officer treated them and when the tape is reviewed 99% of the time the officer was more professional than they probaly should have been.
In this case, dispatch had the vehicle and tag (drive-out)info and basic description of the bad guy (b/m, white tee-shirt) but I believe that without the actual video he would have never been positively id'd.
Not wanting to get into to much, just let me say that another agency stopped the suspect shortly after the murder, but because there was no weapon etc to be found and not a good enough description for them (bad guy had ditched the guns etc & changed his shirt) they let him go!
We use our video cameras on every stop or call, no matter what it is about.
As far as the bad guy is concerned, yes he has a history and was on probation at the time of the shooting and was going to court for a probation revocation later this month. He is also a reqistered sex offender.
Again, I want to thank all of you for your support. Just knowing that you are all out there and that you care made it a little bit easier for me to get through last week.
