Fall River, MA - Officer Richard Magan, 39, responding to a disturbance Friday, fell 20 feet off a stonewall to his death on the train tracks below. The three involved in the fight that brought Officer Magan to the scene were arraigned Monday, Richard DiCarlo, 26, Michael Almeida, 20m and Eugene Coelho, 25. They have been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, disturbing the peace and disorderly conduct. There was 14-year-old boy involved as well. Additional charges may be pending.
Magan had been an officer of the Fall River Police Department for 18 years, and was the recipient of a number of commendations for outstanding police work, and one for bravery. Officers and residents honored the spot where he died with flowers, a cross and an American flag. The incident occurred during a Fall River festival.
Officer Silvia arrived first, subdued the fight and called for backup. Three officers responded, among them Magan. As the officers went through a fence to get down to the tracks, Magan fell down the embankment and off a stone wall. He was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Magan is survived by his wife, Dawn and his three children, Nicholas, 13, Jenna, 9, and Timothy, 7. Officers from Fall River and the surrounding area will gather Wednesday for a ceremonial procession in his honor. A trust fund has been set up in his memory.
