We lost a Chief yesterday...

************************************************** *****

*Chief of Police Joseph White
Rich Square Police Department, NC

Cause of Death: Gunfire
End of Watch: July 16, 2000
Date of Incident: July 16, 2000
Time of Incident: 1600 hours
Age: 61
Tour of Duty: 30 yr
Suspect Info: Fled scene
Weapon Used: Officer's handgun

Chief White was killed after being shot and killed with his own .45 caliber handgun during a traffic stop at the intersection of Highway 258 and State Road 305. No other information about the incident is currently available.

Chief White had recently requested that the town council purchase bullet proof vests for the officers in his three-person department but his request was denied. He had been in law enforcement for 30 years and is survived by his wife, several grown children, and several grandchildren.

*as reported by the ODMP

************************************************** *****

It really doesn't matter the size of the Agency... our LEO's deserve any of the equipment that adds to their safety... especially something as important as the vest. Those who turned down the Chief's request for the three vests needed must surely be feeling ashamed of themselves today. I'm ashamed of them.

God bless you, Chief White... and my prayers for your family.

Ray posted some very kind words of thoughts and prayers for Chief White in the For Cops Only section of the forum. He also included a website address for an article on this tradegy. I had to bring it here:

Thank you, Ray.

BF vests were just made mandatory here in VT a few years ago. It's hard to believe that they are not mandatory everywhere.

My prayers to the Chief's family.

The price of a good vest is between 2 and 3 hundred dollars.

It's to bad that the Officer behind the badge is not.

So many think that a shield is protection enough.

Another useless scumbag will either demand respect in prison or walk the streets at some time in the future.

While Chief White's family walk the floor because of nightmares and questions of why?

The Thin Blue Line is missing a commander today.

Rest in Peace Chief,
Your transfer has been approved.
