A stand off brings about the death of a Deputy...

Hawkins County Sheriff's Department, TN

Cause of Death: Gunfire
End of Watch: July 13, 2000
Date of Incident: July 13, 2000
Time of Incident: 1930 hours
Age: 53
Tour of Duty: 15 yr
Suspect Info: Charged with murder
Weapon Used: Gun; Unknown type

Deputy Gibson was shot and killed during a 13-hour standoff with burglary suspect. A police canine had tracked the suspect from a business to the suspect's home. When other officers arrived the suspect brandished a shotgun and threatened to shoot officers. During the ensuing standoff the officers began to prepare for a tactical entry. Deputy Gibson was approximately 40 feet away from the residence, preparing to fire tear gas canister, when the suspect opened fire, striking him in the head. The suspect was arrested approximately six hours later while attempting to escape.

Deputy Gibson had been with the agency for 15 years and is survived by his wife and two grown daughters.

This has to be one of the hardest types of scenes our LEO's go through... and one of the most dangerous, too.

May Deputy Gibson rest in peace... and may his family find the strength to help them through.

My thoughts and prayers to the Gibson family. I second what you said, Rebecca.

After something like this happens it sure makes you think of how lucky you are to still have your trooper/officer. What a freaking shame. http://www.officer.com/ubb/frown.gif
