Deputy Marshal Hillman was killed when the prisoner transport van he was riding in was struck by a tractor trailer which crossed the median of Highway 65 in Bakersfield, California, during a rainstorm. Marshal Hillman and another deputy marshal were transporting three federal prisoners when another vehicle's tire had a blowout, causing a chain reaction accident involving two tractor trailers and several other vehicles. The other marshal was injured and all three prisoners and a fourth person were killed in the accident. Marshal Hillman had been with the agency for 14 years.
