There is a Full-Time Clay County Deputy on here. He should see this and get with you.

OK, thanks...will await his reply.
I've looked into KCPD, and it sounds like I'll need to get accepted, go through their academy (6 mo's), get through probation (6 mo's)...then I can go reserve.
The other local, smaller PD's either don't have them, or weren't helpful in determining how to get on.

I know KCPD does have reserves but (from what I have been told) it's usually folks that are already certified that they pick-up for that.
I know the several PDs/SOs that I worked for (before moving out here) would only take folks that had been already been through an academy. They wouldn't pay for anyone to go through an academy just to play part-time LEO.

We do have reserves but they are unpaid. You must work 16hrs minimum per month.
Kearney is a small PD in Clay County and they have reserves. I don't know if they have any openings now or not but they do pay them.

Thanks for the info! I'm aware they are unpaid (Kearney is the first I've heard that pay their reserves actually). Was just wondering what's the "process flow" to get on (I don't have POST cert yet).

Get your POST Certificate......
There isn't a PD in the State that will hire you without it.....and most (if not all) aren't going to pay for it.....just so you can Reserve/part-time with them......

As an FYI to others interested (ClayCo sheriff folks have been VERY helpful in answering my questions):
- First requirement (as stated) is the POST certification. There are academies in St. Joe, Warrensburg, and specific to me, Independence (Metropolitan Community College - Blue River Police Academy).
- MCC Blue River Police Academy has Full time classes and Part time classes. Full time takes about 6 months, and starts in January and August. Part time is at night and every other Saturday for a year, starting only in January.
- Once the certificate is obtained, then you apply to the different departments as desired. Obviously, the target department needs to recognize the MCC certificate (for example, I don't think KCPD does).
Looks like I'll shoot for the January class starting '08.
Thanks again to those that helped!

KCPD ONLY takes their academy.........

Regarding KCPD....
It might be best to refer to KCPD's policy on lateral transfers:
http://www.kcpd.org/masterindex/files/ppbm/200/236-1.pdf
Clearly states....
Applicants must have graduated from the Kansas City, Missouri Police
Department Regional Police Academy; St. Louis, Missouri Regional Police
Academy; Missouri State Highway Patrol Academy; or any other police
academy approved by the Administration Bureau Commander.

He's not a lateral.....he hasn't been through an academy yet.....
But you are right, if he wants to work for them as a reserve.....he will have to go through one of the above listed academy's......
I didn't list the lateral stuff because he stated he was looking at Western Missouri's Academy in Independence....

I could call my good friend, Mr./Ms. Administration Bureau Commander, and have him/her hook me up.

You do that....and you will not be a welcomed person in KCPD.....you can count on that.....
Besides....you would have to pass a background check....poly.....fitness eval....the academy....FTO....and all that before you could play Reserve.....

yes sir, I realize that...I left off the /sarcasm tags.
My plan at this point is to obtain the POST certificate via the "part time" (1 yr, M, T, Th, and every other Sat classes) curriculum, starting Jan '08. The first step will lead to the next step(s) (apply, and whatever the target departments require after that).
Will this grand plan come to fuition? Who knows what life will bring...but that's the path I'm aiming for.

Got you......
If your looking for part-time, I know a few folks that went through Western Missouri's Academy and they are good cops..... 1 year is a long time....but if you are committed to do this.....then it should be a piece of cake....
Good luck...

1 year in the academy? No thanks. I've spent 10 months of my life in two different academies and it sucks. I'd go for the full time academy and get it over with if you can go without a job for six months.
Have you looked at Kansas? Kansas will not allow you to pay your own way to an academy. That means you will be employed before you enter the academy, which means they will pay for the academy and pay you while you attend.

Depending on your current certification and training you may be able to test out.

If you're referring to me, I'm not looking to leave. I was referring to the original poster when I suggested they just go for the full time academy and get it over with all at once.

Yeah, but I may transfer counties in few years for a change of pace and to get more for my money. I can pay the same thing in another county and get more house with acreage as opposed to neighbors within arms reach.

What happens in KS, STAYS in KS!
Actually, I'm not looking to go THAT rural. Just somewhere that I can get more for my money and a little more room to myself. And not work 200 crashes a year.

One would suspect as long as there is a place that you can go buy geek stuff that you can talk to Dingo about.....you will be fine wherever you go..... :D

I've considered the 6 mo version to get it over with...but hard to go w/o the job for that long.
