I was driving along about 45 minutes before quitting time, just running radar in my favorite honey hole. A car tops the hill and it had a headlight out. Bingo!

I call out the plate and location, get the car stopped and initiate contact. The kid doesn't have any insurance or a DL, but does had a bad attitude that he is readily dishing out. I tell him to sit tight and run him by the name on his Mexico ID card and stand behind my car as my FTO goes behind an abandoned gas station next door to relieve himself. So, I'm on my first solo traffic stop at night. No biggie. Just as he is out of sight...

Dispatch: "343, is your radio secure?"
Me in pucker mode: "10-4."
Dispatch: "343, the plate you gave me is returning stolen out of XXXXX county. It has been confirmed. Stand by for verbal."

Just when I'm thinking I was about to have to pull the guy out of the car at gunpoint, my FTO comes back, I brief him and we're ready to get him out of the car. Just as we are sneaking up to our positions....

Dispatch: "343, the registration info is returning to the person you just ran. He is the owner of the car. XXXXX county neglected to clear it from their system upon recovery."

I had to take a few minutes off after that stop. :D

Your FTO can't wait a couple of minutes to take a leak while you are on a traffic stop? Glad everything worked out.

Just remember it's not worth trying to take em out solo.....just sit back and wait. Whats the worst that can happen? He takes off? Who cares you have his ID, so you'll catch him eventually. You already did the hard part by getting him to stop.

hmmm....I'm an FTO and I don't remember that in FTO school! I never leave the "kid" unattended, unless we are in the station.

Time is on your side. YOU choose the time of stop, place of stop, where to approach from and WHEN to make the approach. Sometimes you don't get the uh-oh feeling, or the call from dispatch telling you its stolen or the driver has paper, until you have already made contact. If you think its going bad back off get some backup on scene. If you're wrong about it who cares you felt it so act on it.

LOL your FTO really had to pee. Good thing everything went well on that call. Our dispatch usually gives all the info to us prior to making contact with the driver. However, our dispatch is been tranining a bunch of new people.

There was one night that everything was going slow, and I hear one of my coworker make a traffic stop. Since, I wasn't busy, I went over to assist. As I was driving by, I immideatly recognize the passenger from prior arrest/contacts. I didn't know the driver though. So, I parked behing my coworker's unit. Make contact with him, but dispatch took forever to give us the reg. info. We decide to approach the vehicle. I go on the passenger side, and my coworker gets the necessary info to run them both. I stand by the passenger side making sure neither subject does something funny when dispatch goes:

"XXX are you clear to copy?" I looked at my coworker and say, I bet you it's a 10851. Next thing dispatch says "Its a 10851 out of state." This information was given to us 5 min. after the stop.

Needless to say the Sgt. got a little upset with dispatch and had a little discussion with them.
