Hello-

I’ve just submitted my application for employment as an Alaska State Trooper Recruit and have been told that I will receive a call from a Background Investigator two weeks to a month from now. So basically I am at the very beginning of this process and looking for some information.

That said, I am proceeding in my preparations on the premise that I will be invited to go to Anchorage to test in January. Therefore, if I am to burn $2000.00 in airfare, hotel, food and rental car fees I must crush the testing in order to justify the cost. That is to say that if I fail I want it to be for something out side of my control.

My PT regimen is based on preparation for the Army's Special Forces Assessment and Selection/ http://www.bragg.army.mil/specialforces/prepare.htm /. My objective is to be at 100 plus push ups, 52-60 set ups (the time cuts me off, not fatigue) and 9-10 minute run time. I’m pretty fit now but I’m swinging for the fences to insure, as best I can and for my part, that the juice will be worth the squeeze come January.

For the written test preparation I’ve printed out the “State of Alaska Department of Public Safety Entry-Level Trooper Candidate Preparation Guide” dated August 2001, I purchased “Learning Express: The Complete Preparation Guide, State Trooper Exam” and I am awaiting the information packet that is to be sent to me from the Recruitment Unit. I will push as hard as I can to be ready for the written and if there are better resources out there I would love to know about it.

For the oral I’ve been studying maps with trooper detachment and post locations that I have highlighted on it as well as main highways, border crossings, ports, populations centers, et al. I’ve been reviewing the Alaska State Budget FY 2008 to determine what law enforcement priorities are out there for Alaska in the upcoming year. I’ve gone through the newsletters for the AST to get as much background on the Troopers and the individuals that I’m now likely to be interacting with as a Candidate and Recruit. I’m going to read some books that I’ve found out there that deal with the AST and asked FOAST if they have any recommended history readings and am still awaiting a reply. I’ve a google alert sending me notifications of news that deals with the AST to keep me up to speed with current events.

Bottom line: I believe I have all my ducks in a row to address those things that I can address, i.e. the PT and written tests but I need information on the things that cannot be practiced but still must be successfully overcome. For example:

1) Information on the methods currently employed by the AST to determine psych fitness and personality type of candidates.
2) Questions that I might encounter in the oral.
3) How the written and PT test scores play into the selection process.
4) What are the steps in the testing/selection process according to an actual experience?
5) All the other things that I am sure that I’ve missed and need to be brought up to speed on.

Also my credit is trashed but total honesty and straightforward ownership seem to be the path to bypassing that issue and so I’ve been johnny on the spot with that situation. Any “newish” Troopers out there that got through the process in spite of credit problems?

Thanks folks, sorry this ran so long and I look forward to reading your responses.
