Yea Im getting ready to be done with my 5 years in the service and I plan on going to college and getting my degree in CJ.
I have been lurking for a little and have a couple of questions.
1. Will employers look at my qualifications that I've recieved in the military ie. marksmanship, self-defense, security clearance. and tours.(plus time that I spent being a police explorer and ride along time in high school)
2. A general overview on how the hiring process is done starting from the very beggining.
3. Background check...Ok I have absolutely no tickets fines or any police record no bad credit ( I do carry a secret clearance). I understand that allot of places administer polygraph's and early in my teens I did indulge in smoking pot, more times than I can count. The last time I did an illegal substance would have to be about 7 years ago. Will that effect me being hired anywhere or since it was so long ago it wont matter.
Ok I know its allot to ask but I think those questions should be pretty easy to answer. well thank you in advance!

From your post, you sound like a viable candidate. I would suggest to you that a CJ Degree will not give you an automatic "leg-up" over other applicants. Almost any Liberal Arts Degree will be as good as CJ. Regardless of degree(s), it will be necessary for you to test well in each phase of the hiring process.

If your standard MO is to goad people into do your bidding, then perhaps going somewhere else is a good idea. Then again, if goading is your style, choosing another profession might be in order as well.

You have already received some comments on this issue/your questions.
Each applicant is looked at upon the agencies hiring standards. Being that you are/were in the Military, all they will look at is your DD214, not your skills you obtained, such as marksmenship, etc. With your illegal substance abuse, you need to do some serious number counting. No knowing how many times will not fly. Will it matter , yes.
Do however finish college. A CJ degree, well if thats your cup of tea, if not go for a degree that will assist you if you don't get hired in LE.

Actually, you (deleted for decorum purposes) each of your questions has been addressed ad nauseum in the appropriate forums (i.e.- Ask A Cop, Recruitment and Hiring subforum), and had you bothered to STFF, using the keywords from your questions (CJ Degree), etc., you would already have the answers you seek, and you would have them without expecting others to do YOUR work for YOU.
Had you truly been lurking here as you claim, you would have already stumbed upon the answers.
Cheers,
EDJ
