I am intrested in applying for the SS and was wondering if there are any agents or former agents that have any advice or thoughts on their experience. Specifically on the time committment of travel and things like that. Would you recommend it over the DEA, ATF, or FBI? I really want to get into one of those three and have been offered a "conditional offer of employment" with the DEA but they are in a hiring freeze. I am definitely not limiting my options to those three agencies and therefore considering the SS; especially since I am now single.

There is tons of info on this board and on 911Hotjobs, do a search and you will find anything/everything you want to know.

I am former USSS-UD, my advice is gain knowledge in a foreign language like Arabic, Farsi, Russian, or Chinese. Many SA's have prior military/LE or masters degrees, very competitive.

Also, understand the mission of the USSS, it's about protection not enforcement, much different than most 1811 spots. They travel like crazy during a campaign like all the usss guys. Hope that helps

so what did you think about the UD position? i was thinking of applying, but i heard it was pretty crazy in terms of how they handle things there like overtime shifts, vacation, etc. just wondering.

Search old threads for this, UP On Base and many others have commented about their experiences in USSS UD in the past. Good luck!

Sounds like you are not sure what you want to do. All those agencies have completely different missions. Going from drug enforcement to protection/currency crimes is a 180 in my opinion. It sounds to me you need to figure out what you want to do and do that. Not just try to get on with one of the alphabet agencies because you want to be a special agent.

Very good point Stare - there are a lot of people who will apply to any and all 1811 positions because they want the SA title. Being in the USSS is totally different than FBI/ATF/DEA, each has an important mission but the Service's main priority is protection, FBI/DEA is about enforcement.

In my opinion the ATF is the best federal gig out there.

I am quite aware what each mission of the agencies are, I have been looking at them for several years going through college, work, and grad school. My question was regarding experience in the USSS. I know what I want to do and that would be to work for the DEA or ATF, ( I know their missions are different), but I'm also not going to "stick my eggs all in one basket" so to speak. I believe that there are opportunities out there but they aren't going to fall in my lap while I wait around for them either. Why is it so bad to have interest in working for different agencies and missions? I don't care what the title of the position may happen to be. I want to do investigation work in regards to the missions of those agencies.

Do the Secret Service SA's have Tactical Teams? Or are the only ones in the Uniformed Division?

Yes the SA's have some tactical teams, not as many as UD. They want to take over CS from UD but don't see that happening anytime soon but the agents always get what they want in the end.
