According to there recruiting media it is the best entry-level job in California. So my question is do you really think so. Another question are you allowed to carry off duty? I have had too many run ins with prior IMs and we are not allowed to carry so it does get nerve wrecking. Any other pieces of info or advice about this agancy would be appreciated.

Yeah, CA correctional officers can carry off duty since they have the CA Post Certification so technically they are peace officers. Also they are hiring like crazy right so right now would be the best time to get in.

CDCR C/O's are certified as peace officers (as are literally a hundred other job classifications in the state), but it is NOT the same POST certification police and sheriff's deputies have (i.e. you can't lateral from CDCR to a local PD/SD). However there are some good opportunities available outside of a prison while still working for CDCR. Get some experience on the inside and then apply to become a parole agent. I have worked with some really great parole agents as a task force agent. The parole agents were squared away folks and fun to work with...
