Believe we still have a couple of forum members who are VA Officers. Hopefully, they can be a little more helpful to you. From what I've gathered personally, much will depend on the VA Facility location, whether or not the director is pro-law enforcement, or has an understanding of law enforcement. Other factors as well, as they relate to off-duty authority, off-duty carry etc.

I know several VA Officers and have applied to the one in Biloxi, MS. PhilipCal is right when it comes to whether the director is pro-LE. They do allow you to carry under HR218. They can't prevent you anyways. They cant take something away they didn't give you in the first place. Most allow you to bring your own weapon and store in your locker at work. I have heard the one is near Seattle gets into some stuff due to the fact it is located in a bad area and all the criminals run on to the VA property evading Seattle PD. It all depends on where you go. I am sure the duties range differently depending on the size of their force and the amount of acreage they cover.

Both Lumberjack and PhillipCal are right.
Myself as a VA Police Officer, I do know the VA has to get out of the 80 style policing. They have to start adapting with the crimes. Its a good agency to work for. Do they need to improve yes. If you want to bust rapist, murders.. you prob. won't do alot of that at the VA.
Lumberjack have you heard anyting from the VA down here?

I haven't heard anything yet. I applied a year ago and had a telephone interview but it didn't go well. I just had my first child when they called and had been up for 2 days straight. I was so tired I still barely remember the interview. My buddy is leaving there early next month. I will probably call HR down there next week and see what's up! I heard the chief left down there. Not sure if that's good or bad.
I saw the advertisment for the chief. That's a nice paycheck! I applied for the officer job announcement about four months ago (a little less actually). I received a call from Ms. Doucy the ohter day, I'm thinking they want an interview. I hate to tell them they are a little late. The company I just started working for requires I pay back $5,000 for the security clearance if I don't stay a year. Unfortuntely the pay is only $1500 more at the VA, and I have to show up every day for how ever long the shift is. My current job just requires I work forty hours or complete my expected weekly work goals.

Just heard through a reliable source they can not interview applicants until they select the new chief. The old chief was terminated and it looks like other police supervisors are about to follow in his footsteps. I don't know if that's a good sign or not. I will have to ask my contact what exactly is going on down there.

A lot of the hiring process through the VA is done by HR. So it's really mostly in their ball field.

The last time I interviewed it was determined by the chief and captain/lieutenant that inteviewed me. Does anyone know about the VA in Charleston, SC?
